Video: See the fox! 'Silver Fox Swag:' Animal runs on SMU field during Carroll's winning TD
The St. Louis Cardinals have the famed playoff squirrel. Now apparently the Southlake Carroll Dragons have their own furry, postseason celebrity -- a fox.
A gray-and-brown fox ran onto the field at SMU's Ford Stadium during quarterback Kenny Hill's game-winning 35-yard touchdown run with 46 seconds left vs. Skyline in a Class 5A Division I state semifinal Saturday. The score capped Carroll's frenzied 14-point barrage in the final 2:26. The Dragons punched their ticket to the state championship game next Saturday at Cowboys Stadium with a 28-24 win.
Back to the fox.
As Hill was spinning out of tackles down the east sideline on his touchdown run and neared the north end zone, the fox appeared out of nowhere and ran in the opposite direction between the hashmarks on the field. (Perspective: The fox ran from the closed horseshoe side to the open side.)
The fox got to the retaining wall on the south side and was seen on the grassy knoll running out the stadium as Carroll celebrated its touchdown.
Perhaps this is all fitting.
After the game Carroll assistant coach Chase Wasson showed his hat to SportsDayHS staff writer Corbett Smith. Embroidered on the back of the hat: "silver fox swag." Wasson said he calls his father, Carroll head coach Hal Wasson, the 'silver fox' because of his hair color.
What a crazy ending to a memorable ballgame.
