Nine sacks, 4 TDs from Kyle Hicks fuel Arlington Martin's blowout of San Angelo Central

ARLINGTON — Kyle Hicks scored four touchdowns and Arlington Martin’s defense sacked San Angelo Central quarterback Logan Sawyer nine times, sending a powerful message in a 43-12 victory in a Class 5A Region I Division I area round playoff game Friday night at Cravens Field.

Martin (11-1) will face the winner of Saturday’s area round game between Euless Trinity and Allen, while Central — which won its first outright district championship in 48 years — ends the season with a 9-3 record.

“The defense set us up with great field position again and again,” Martin coach Bob Wager said. “We blocked a punt, and we had a couple of turnovers. When you look up in the fourth quarter and you see that we’ve still got guys running to the ball play after play, it really makes you feel good.”

Hicks finished the game with 100 yards on 21 carries.

Early on, Martin’s aggressive defense and bruising running game were too much for Central, which saw its first possession end when Martin linebacker Jordan Avery sacked quarterback Logan Sawyer for an 8-yard loss.

Martin scored five plays later when Hicks scored on a 7-yard run. Martin added another touchdown on its third possession on a 4-yard quarterback keeper from Brodie Lambert.

Martin made it 21-0 early in the second quarter on a 24-yard run from Hicks.

Offensively, Martin used a barrage of trick plays to keep Central off-guard, including a direct snap to Hicks on a punt for a first down and a pass from receiver Chris Turner to Lambert for a 6-yard touchdown to give Martin a 28-0 lead early in the third quarter.

Central came into the contest averaging 29.2 points per game.

Central’s offense did see some light in the second half thanks to the efforts of receiver Rileigh Davis, who caught one touchdown pass for 23 yards and another on a 53-yard catch after a successful onside kick that pulled Central within 28-12 midway through the third quarter.

The game was a rematch from last year, which Martin won, 39-7.
