Saturday's football playoff roundup: Failed 2-point try late dooms Mesquite Horn

Copperas Cove rallies, wins by inches; Prestonwood’s a winner

WACO — Copperas Cove overcame a 21-point deficit, then stopped Mesquite Horn on a two-point conversion attempt with 52 seconds remaining to win, 48-47, in a Class 5A Division II Region II bi-district playoff game at Baylor’s Floyd Casey Stadium.

Treyvon Marsh scored on a 7-yard run as Horn capped an 11-play drive to pull within one. Horn then went for two, and Medgar Coleman was stopped inches short of the goal line.

Cove (10-1) trailed 41-20 with 1:11 remaining in the third quarter before reeling off 28 consecutive points.

Three plays after recovering a fumble, Cove cut the deficit to 41-34 with 6:16 remaining when Chans Colbert scored on a 25-yard run. Cove recovered an onside kick at the Horn 38, and six plays later Cove tied the score at 41 with 4:19 remaining on Orlando Thomas’ 10-yard pass to Girod Fluelen.

Cove again onside kicked and recovered, and Colbert scored on a 6-yard run with 2:50 remaining to give Cove a 48-41 lead.

Horn (4-7) built leads of 28-7 and 34-13 before being outscored 35-13 in the second half.

Cove advanced to play Rowlett at 9 p.m. Friday at Cowboys Stadium.

Prestonwood Christian 27, San Antonio Central Catholic 7

PLANO — Parker Ash connected with Zach Peters on a pair of first-half touchdown passes, and Prestonwood Christian Academy began the defense of its TAPPS Division I state championship with a victory over San Antonio Central Catholic.

Prestonwood stretched its 13-7 halftime lead by scoring on its first two second-half possessions. Raleigh Beougher capped 10-play drive with a 1-yard plunge, and Grayson Warren added a 15-yard scoring run. The duo combined for 107 yards rushing.

Central Catholic’s Alec Parker picked off a tipped pass and returned it 53 yards for a game-tying touchdown late in the first quarter.

Fort Worth Nolan 50, Houston Christian 10

FORT WORTH — Daniel Walker scored touchdowns on a 68-yard kickoff return and a 10-yard reception as Fort Worth Nolan, SportsDay’s top-ranked large private school, shook off a sluggish start and defeated Houston Christian in a TAPPS Division I first-round playoff game.

Jordan Maun and Ben Patterson also had touchdown receptions for Nolan (10-1), and David Moser, David Authier and Joe Montez added scoring runs.

Shelton 28, Frisco Legacy Christian 7

CARROLLTON — Rich Morton rushed for 175 yards and three touchdowns and quarterback Ben Luedtke ran for 148 yards and a score as Shelton defeated Frisco Legacy Christian.

It was Shelton’s second victory of the season over Legacy Christian. After rushing for 110 yards in the first meeting, Ovie Urevbu of Legacy Christian was held to 3 yards on seven attempts while wearing a cast on his left hand.

Lake Dallas 45, Canyon 14

WICHITA FALLS — Dalyn Williams rushed for 143 yards and three touchdowns and also passed for two TDs as Lake Dallas throttled Canyon in a Class 4A Division II bi-district matchup at Memorial Stadium.

Williams and Tyler Vance connected on an 11-yard touchdown pass as Lake Dallas jumped to a 17-0 lead. Vance added a 39-yard scoring reception on a screen pass from Williams in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Travis Cosby put up a heroic effort for Canyon (5-6), rushing for 109 yards on 24 carries and scoring both of his team’s touchdowns,

Lake Dallas (8-3) will face El Paso Burges in the area round this week, at a time and site to be determined.

Austin St. Michael's 21, Argyle Liberty Christian 14

AUSTIN — Cameron Waites’ 1-yard quarterback sneak with 35 seconds left gave Austin St. Michael’s a TAPPS Division I playoff victory over Argyle Liberty Christian.

A 36-yard pass from Waites to wide receiver Reed Carlton set up the score, which came three plays later.

St. Michaels (8-3) faces Houston St. Thomas next Saturday in a state quarterfinal, with details to be announced.

Liberty (6-5) led 7-0 before fourth-quarter touchdown runs by Quinta Goode and Waites gave St. Michael’s a 14-7 lead with 5:29 left.

Liberty tied it with 2:36 left on a 33-yard run by Camron Cornett.

TCA-Addison 77, Brownsville St. Joseph 40

ADDISON — Trinity Christian-Addison put up 41 points in its first quarter of the TAPPS Division I playoffs, cruising to a decisive victory over Brownsville St. Joseph at Tom Landry Stadium.

TCA (6-5) rolled up 605 yards in total offense, with most of that coming from the arm of Daniel Davidson. Davidson threw for 433 yards and six touchdowns, with tailback Tanner Snow and receiver Nick Plumlee each going over the 100-yard receiving mark.

Snow also had 145 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Plumlee hauled in 14 catches for 257 yards and four touchdowns.

TCA will face Beaumont Kelly in the second round.

Colleyville Covenant 60, Richardson Canyon Creek 15

BEDFORD — Austin Barr completed 11 of 13 passes for 350 yards and six touchdowns to lead Colleyville Covenant Christian over Richardson Canyon Creek Christian in a TAPPS Division IV first-round playoff game at Pennington Field.

Covenant Christian (7-3, 3-0) was presented a trophy as the TAPPS Division IV area champion after its fourth triumph in a row. The school advances to a second-round matchup next Saturday against Halletsville Sacred Heart.

Barr’s favorite target was Donovan Jeanne, who pulled down five receptions for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Garrett Krebs had two receptions, both touchdowns, totaling 131 yards.

Killeen 36, Granbury 3

WACO — Garrett Gaskamp passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as Killeen advanced to the second round of the Class 4A Division I playoffs by beating Granbury Floyd Casey Stadium.

Gaskamp turned the game into a rout in the second half, connecting with Devarri McCray for scores of 56 and 21 yards and throwing a 39-yard touchdown pass to Victor Scott. He also ran for a 39-yard TD.

Granbury running back Brandon Davis carried 25 times for 101 yards. He ended his senior season with 1,808 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Killeen forced four Granbury turnovers and blocked a punt. Its only turnover on offense came when Granbury’s Michael Brawley intercepted a pass in the end zone in the first quarter.

After a scoreless first quarter, Killeen defensive back Ameer Lee ran back a fumble 41 yards for a 7-0 Killeen lead. Moments later, Granbury quarterback Justice Love was tackled in the end zone for a 9-0 Killeen lead.

North Forney 34, Wills Point 28

ROYSE CITY — Stephen Buckley’s 29-yard touchdown run with 1:08 remaining capped a wild final two minutes as North Forney defeated Wills Point in a Class 3A Division II Region II bi-district game.

Wills Point took a 28-21 lead on a fourth-and-goal touchdown run by quarterback Dalton King with just over two minutes left.

North Forney answered in four plays, scoring on a 33-yard touchdown pass from Buckley to Daniel Anguiano to tie the score up at 28. On the ensuing possession, North Forney defensive back Armon Franklin recovered a Wills Point fumble, and Buckley scored on the next play.

Buckley finished with 157 yards passing and three touchdowns along with 55 yards rushing and a touchdown. Wills Point was led by senior quarterback Dalton King, who threw for 297 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two other scores.

North Forney will take on three-time defending Class 3A state champion Carthage on at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler.
