Week 10 Class 5A roundup, part I: Grapevine defense delivers playoff berth
Richland is stopped in last minute; Colleyville Heritage routs Haltom
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS — Grapevine held firm after Richland drove inside its 10-yard line in the final minute, claiming the final playoff berth from District 6-5A with a 21-16 victory Friday night at the Birdville ISD Athletics Complex.
Grapevine (6-4, 5-3) will face Mansfield in the opening round of the playoffs.
After trailing 21-10, Richland (5-5, 3-5) scored on an 8-yard touchdown catch by Jordan Whitfield with 3:49 to play, then drove inside the Grapevine 10 with less than 30 seconds remaining.
Grapevine’s defense, however, stopped that final drive, with back-to-back incomplete passes ending the game.
Colleyville Heritage 40, Haltom 18
GRAPEVINE — Cody Thomas threw for 352 yards and four touchdowns as Colleyville Heritage defeated Haltom.
Colleyville (9-1) had already wrapped up the No. 2 seed in District 6-5A and will play Mansfield Timberview next week.
Irving 24, Irving Nimitz 21 (OT)
IRVING — Ivan Soriano kicked a 42-yard field goal that bounced off the crossbar and through, giving Irving its first victory of the season.
Irving (1-9, 1-7 in District 6-5A) forced overtime with a 6-yard pass from Jarred Tennell-Hickey to Austin Morris and a diving catch by Tino Cazares for a two-point conversion.
In overtime, Nimitz (2-8, 1-7) fumbled on fourth down from the 6. Irving took over on the 25 and lost yardage before Soriano’s winning field goal.
Arlington Bowie 41, Arlington 21
ARLINGTON — Kolby Listenbee passed for 208 yards and two touchdowns, and the Bowie offense piled up 459 yards in a victory over Arlington in a District 4-5A game at Cravens Field. Both teams are headed for the playoffs.
Tavarreon Dickerson gained 266 yards on 24 carries and scored three touchdowns for Arlington.
Duncanville 56, Cedar Hill 55 (OT)
DUNCANVILLE — After Jaquan Cole scored on a 15-yard run, Duncanville knocked down a two-point pass attempt in overtime to defeat Cedar Hill.
In a game in which the teams amassed 1,050 yards, Cedar Hill scored two late-fourth-quarter touchdowns to tie the score but was stopped at the Duncanville 1-yard line with no time remaining in regulation.
Both teams are bound for the playoffs.
Mansfield Timberview 45, Mansfield Legacy 7
MANSFIELD — Josh Smith rushed for 223 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Chuck Taylor threw for 176 yards and a TD as Mansfield Timberview defeated Mansfield Legacy.
South Grand Prairie 43, Grand Prairie 25
GRAND PRARIE — Quarterback Jared Johnson threw for 142 yards and two touchdowns as South Grand Prairie (4-6, 3-4) defeated Grand Prairie in a District 5-5A game.
Mansfield 59, Midlothian 14
MANSFIELD — Kenneth Burks rushed for 218 yards and scored five touchdowns as Mansfield (9-1, 6-1 District 5-5A) powered past Midlothian (3-7, 1-6).
