Week 9 5A roundup part two: Plano West, Plano East alive in playoff chase; Mesquite Horn clinches berth
FLOWER MOUND — Quarterback Travis Korry ran for 353 yards and six touchdowns as Plano West stayed in the hunt for the final playoff spot in District 8-5A with a 55-42 win over Flower Mound.
Plano West (5-4, 3-3) can advance with a win over Plano next Friday at Clark Field.
Flower Mound (3-6, 2-4) was eliminated despite 491 yards and six touchdowns passing from quarterback Connor Wanhanen.
Plano East 28, Plano 24
PLANO — Dante’ Taylor’s 6-yard touchdown run with 47 seconds left gave Plano East (5-4, 3-3) a come-from-behind victory over rival Plano (4-5, 1-5) at Clark Stadium.
Plano East overcame a 17-0 halftime deficit and kept alive its postseason chances.
Taylor’s three rushing touchdowns and game-high 153 yards led the Plano East offense.
Southlake Carroll 45, Saginaw 14
Quarterback Drew Ahmuty, in his first career start, completed 80 percent of his passes and accounted for three touchdowns as Southlake Carroll defeated Saginaw at Dragon Stadium.
Ahmuty completed his first eight passes for Carroll (9-0, 6-0 District 7-5A) and finished 16-for-20 with 159 passing yards and two touchdown passes. The sophomore also had 28 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown before being pulled at the start of the fourth quarter with a 38-7 lead.
Coppell 35, Keller 17
COPPELL — Coppell rushed for 261 yards and turned three Keller turnovers into scores at Coppell High School Stadium.
Keller gained only 53 yards in the second half — 20 of which came on its final drive.
Skyline 37, Lake Highlands 0
Devante Kincade passed for 367 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for two more as Skyline pounded Lake Highlands in a District 9-5A matchup at Forester Field.
Skyline (9-0, 6-0) racked up 362 total yards in the first half and led 23-0. Kincade passed for 223 yards.
Flower Mound Marcus 42, Lewisville 14
LEWISVILLE — Harvey Giddens and Jeff Smiley each rushed for more than 100 yards to lead Marcus to victory in the annual Battle of the Ax game at Max Goldsmith Stadium.
Marcus (8-1, 5-1) compiled 498 yards, with 406 coming on the ground. Giddens led the way with 142 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Smiley rolled up 129 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.
DeSoto 41, Mesquite 16
DESOTO — Devin Rushing had three touchdowns and DeSoto scored 31 first-half points to put away Mesquite in a District 11-5A game at Eagle Stadium.
DeSoto (9-0, 4-0) has secured at least a share of the district title and can win it outright with a win on the road next week against Longview.
Jesuit 49, Samuell 7
Jake Oliver caught three second-quarter touchdowns from Brian Buell, leading Jesuit (7-2, 5-1) to a Homecoming victory over Samuell (1-8, 1-5) in District 9-5A action at Jesuit Ranger Stadium.
Marty Murad scored first-half rushing touchdowns from 23 and 20 yards, the second set up by an Orion Salters interception to stake Jesuit to a 14-0 lead.
Richardson 59, W.T. White 39
Devante Branch and Parker Smith led Richardson (5-4, 3-3) past W.T. White (4-5, 2-4) in a District 9-5A contest at Couch Field.
Branch rushed 14 times for 164 yards and two touchdowns, while Parker ran for 114 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries. Parker also passed for 30 yards and a score.
Garland Lakeview 14, North Garland 10
GARLAND — Denton Edwards threw for 170 yards, including the winning 29-yard touchdown pass to Jarvis Baxter, to lead Lakeview (2-7, 2-4 District 10-5A) to victory over North Garland (0-9, 0-6) at Williams Stadium.
Mesquite Horn 16, North Mesquite 13
MESQUITE — Travis Tamez kicked a 33-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining to lift Mesquite Horn to a dramatic victory over North Mesquite that clinched a playoff spot for Horn.
It was the third field goal of the night for Horn (3-6, 2-2), as Travis Tamez had connected from 49 and 19 yards earlier in the contest.
North Mesquite (4-5, 0-4) was eliminated from playoff contention.
Richardson Berkner 27, Sunset 8
Yedidiah Louis rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown on four carries as Richardson Berkner (6-3, 4-2 in District 9-5A) clinched a playoff spot with a win over Sunset (1-8, 0-6).
Louis, a junior quarterback, also passed for 127 yards and three touchdowns. Louis’ longest scoring plays were a 60-yard run and a 50-yard pass to Michael Weaver.
Keller Central 36, Justin Northwest 6
JUSTIN — Tanner Tausch passed for 206 yards and three touchdowns as Keller Central (7-2, 4-2) took one step closer to earning the first postseason berth in school history.
