Week 8 5A roundup, part two: Justin Northwest upsets Coppell; Euless Trinity rolls
COPPELL — Allen Young scored on a 73-yard reception and Justin Northwest’s defense forced three turnovers in a District 8-5A victory over Coppell at Buddy Echols Field.
Northwest (3-5, 2-3) never trailed, but Coppell had a shot to tie the game with 1:35 to play on a 54-yard field goal try by Nick Jordan. Jordan’s kick had the distance but sailed wide left.
Coppell (5-3, 2-3) had one final chance with the ball after forcing a punt with nine seconds to play, but Northwest stopped the return in Coppell territory as time expired.
Northwest tailback Michael Reed carried most of the offensive load with game-high 93 yards rushing.
Euless Trinity 38, Grapevine 0
BEDFORD — Quarterback Matt Hawkins ran for a pair of touchdowns and handed off for three more as Euless Trinity remained unbeaten atop District 6-5A by running over Grapevine, 38-0.
Running back Joel Kimpela led the way with 141 yards rushing as Trinity (9-0, 7-0), ranked No. 4 in the area, rolled up 367 of its 445 total yards on the ground. That included 250 yards and all touchdowns in the first half.
Hawkins ran for 72 yards on 11 carries with scoring runs of 16 and 4 yards. Trinity also got touchdown runs of 3 yards by Brandon Reeves, 55 by Paul Tuipulota and 13 by Kailahi Kautai.
Austin Lopez added a 43-yard field goal for the only scoring of the second half.
Grapevine (4-4, 3-3) could muster only 51 yards on the ground and 156 in total offense against a stifling Trinity defense that kept quarterback Brett Harbin on the run all night.
South Grand Prairie 42, Mansfield Legacy 25
GRAND PRAIRIE — Leonard Aikens had a game-high 92 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns for South Grand Prairie, which scored 35 first-half points to defeat Mansfield Legacy.
Aikens had 72 rushing yards in the first half and capped the game’s opening drive with an 11-yard touchdown run. He also had a 15-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to give South Grand Prairie (3-5, 2-3 District 5-5A) a 42-12 lead.
South Grand Prairie senior quarterback Jared Johnson, who has committed to Baylor, finished 7-of-14 for 116 passing yards and threw two touchdown passes. Johnson added a 2-yard touchdown run for South Grand Prairie’s third touchdown of the first quarter.
South Grand Prairie in the first half held Mansfield Legacy (2-6, 2-3 District 5-5A) to 17 rushing yards and sacked quarterback Davis Ellis five times.
Ellis was 23-of-37 for 262 passing yards. In addition, Andy Ritter had a game-high nine receptions and 112 receiving yards.
Richland 28, Haltom 6
Stephen Barrett rushed for 211 yards and two scores and quarterback Walker Burns added 72 yards and a pair of scores as Richland defeated Haltom.
Richland (3-5, 2-4) gained 370 yards overall, 356 of them on 61 carries. Burns scored on runs of 4 and 11 yards, and Barrett added scoring runs of 3 and 11 yards.
Haltom (3-5, 2-4) gained only 140 yards until its last drive, which ended with a 38-yard scoring run from Kameron Young with 1:08 left. Young, who didn’t carry until the final drive, led Haltom with 85 yards on four carries.
Irving MacArthur 53, Irving Nimitz 13
IRVING — Quarterback Justin Chavez rushed for two touchdowns in the first quarter, and Irving MacArthur went on to defeat Irving Nimitz.
Chavez finished with eight carries for 78 yards for MacArthur (3-5, 3-3). Austin Huckaba carried 13 times for 124 yards for Nimitz (2-6, 1-5).
Keller Fossil Ridge 28, Saginaw 9
SAGINAW — Chaylon Bowman gained 178 yards on eight carries and scored twice in the first quarter as Fossil Ridge (5-3, 3-2) ran past Saginaw (1-7, 0-5) at Rough Rider Stadium.
Bowman broke free for a 90-yard touchdown run on Fossil Ridge’s first play from scrimmage. He added a 68-yard scoring run to give Fossil Ridge at 14-0 lead in the opening period.
Glensen Perry’s interception set up Fossil Ridge at the Saginaw 12-yard line early in the second. Sheldon Neuse covered the distance on the next play with a touchdown run. Fossil Ridge took a 21-0 lead into halftime.
Saginaw broke the shutout with a 76-yard scoring drive, capped by Christian Atkinson’s 5-yard run late in the third quarter.
Fossil Ridge wrapped up the game when Cedric Johnson scored on 40-yard run with 3:40 left.
North Crowley 75, Arlington Sam Houston 28
FORT WORTH — North Crowley kept its playoff hopes alive in large part because of quarterback Josh Price in a District 4-5A win over Arlington Sam Houston.
Price finished with 163 yards rushing and 272 yards passing. He threw for four touchdowns and ran for three more.
The game was a blowout early as North Crowley (3-5, 3-2) capitalized on two Sam Houston pass interference calls and a personal foul on its three first-quarter possessions, each of which ended with a touchdown.
Midlothian 45, Grand Prairie 30
MIDLOTHIAN — Justin Seeton rushed for 230 yards and three touchdowns as Midlothian (3-5, 1-4 District 5-5A) defeated Grand Prairie (0-8, 0-5).
Grand Prairie’s Devante Lacy had 10 catches for 170 yards and scored on receptions of 70 and 34 yards.
Arlington Bowie 44, Weatherford 0
WEATHERFORD — Russell Hansbrough rushed for two touchdowns and Robert Zenon scored on a 75-yard punt return as Arlington Bowie rolled past Weatherford in District 4-5A.
Hansbrough had 83 yards on seven carries and Brican Crossley carried seven times for 116 yards for Bowie, which totaled 262 yards on the ground.
Weatherford was held to 145 yards of total offense.
