No. 1 Allen survives a scare, defeats Plano West after blowing 20-point lead
ALLEN — After two straight quadruple-overtime games, Plano West was ready to go the distance with No. 1 Allen.
But Plano West’s dramatic streak ended in the fourth quarter Friday night. Allen took the lead with 9:32 left and then held on for a 40-28 victory at Eagles Stadium.
It was another scare for Allen (7-0 4-0), coming off a 42-38 win over Plano East. It can thank its defense for not breaking when it really mattered after bending for much of the game.
Allen running back Jonathan Williams finished with 181 yards and one touchdown. Plano West’s Carlos Wiggins had 193 yards and three touchdowns.
Allen quarterback Alec Morris completed 16 of 23 passes for 219 yards and four touchdowns, with one interception. He also ran for a score. Plano West quarterback Travis Korry, making his second start, threw for 136 yards.
In a game of severe momentum shifts, Plano West overcame a 20-0 deficit, cutting it to 27-21 at halftime.
Plano West opened the second half pounding the ball straight at Allen, stopping only when offensive lineman Chase Thomas broke his leg. After a 15-minute delay, Plano West scored two plays later, on a 4-yard run by Wiggins, to take its first lead, 28-27.
Plano West then drove to Allen’s 34 but surrendered the ball on a fumble by Korry. Allen regained the lead on Morris’ 18-yard touchdown run, and Williams followed that up with a 1-yard touchdown run.
The teams combined for 975 yards.
