FW Nolan sneaks past Prestonwood Christian in overtime, 35-28
PLANO — Amyn Maloney caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Joseph Prud’homme in overtime to lead No. 2 Nolan to a 35-28 win over No. 1 Prestonwood in a match-up of SportsDay’s top two large private schools.
Luke Alves ran five consecutive plays to the Prestonwood 3 to set up Maloney’s game-winning score on the first possession in overtime.
Prestonwood (5-2, 3-1 in TAPPS I-1) had a first-and-10 at Nolan’s 15 on its overtime possession. But four consecutive passes on fade patterns to the end zone fell incomplete.
Nolan (6-1, 2-1) trailed, 28-18, entering the third quarter, but Connor Abene’s third field goal of the game and Alves’ 1-yard run with 7:01 remaining tied the score at 28-28.
Both teams had chances to win in regulation. Prestonwood lost a fumble in Nolan territory with less than four minutes remaining. Nolan’s Abene missed a 45-yard field goal attempt with 1:13 left.
Prestonwood, playing without injured starting quarterback Parker Ash, looked strong in the first half, scoring on four consecutive possessions to forge ahead 28-12.
Prestonwood quarterback Claude Person fired first-half touchdown passes to Stephen Reigel, Cameron Yates and Brandon Henry as Prestonwood moved out to a 21-12 lead.
Person (241 yards passing, 3 TDs) also had a 64-yard run to the Nolan 2-yard line to set up J.P. Coward’s touchdown run and the 16-point lead with 61 seconds left in the half. Then it got interesting.
Nolan’s Daniel Walker returned the ensuing kickoff 105 yards for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion failed and Prestonwood led by 10 points.
After three incompletions, Nolan got the ball back on its own 45 with 21 seconds left in the half. But the Vikings didn’t get a field goal attempt off, going into halftime with the 10-point deficit.
