Week 6 5A roundup, part two: Flower Mound, Coppell strike late to escape with wins

Receiver Beau LaFave made a one-handed grab on a pass from Marshall Williams and raced 68 yards for the winning touchdown Friday night as Flower Mound defeated Plano, 42-35.

The catch with 5 1/2 minutes left gave Flower Mound (2-4, 1-2 District 8-5A) a 40-35 lead and helped overcome a 21-point third quarter from Plano (3-3, 0-3), which entered the fourth quarter protecting a one-point advantage.

Plano has lost its first three district games for the first time since 2004, when it finished 4-6.

Plano failed to convert on a fourth-and-6 from the Flower Mound 32 with 5:42 left. On the next play, Williams — who finished 26-of-44 passing for 308 yards passing and five touchdowns — found LaFave for the go-ahead score. LaFave caught five passes for 106 yards and also had a first-quarter touchdown.

Flower Mound receiver Chas Taylor added three touchdowns and 98 yards on eight catches, and running back Cole McKeel had a game-high 124 rushing yards.

Plano quarterback Richard Lagow completed 22 of 37 passes for 321 yards. He threw touchdowns to three different receivers and had a 1-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter.

Coppell 22, Keller Fossil Ridge 19

COPPELL — Coppell used its ground game to power a wild comeback, rallying from a 12-point first-half deficit to defeat Keller Fossil Ridge in District 7-5A play at Buddy Echols Stadium.

With starting quarterback Jake Larson out for the season, Coppell (5-1, 2-1) rushed for 270 yards. Luke Jenner had 173 yards on 26 carries.

Connor Wilson plunged in from 6 yards out to give Coppell a 20-19 edge in the third quarter, then added a two-point conversion.

Fossil Ridge (3-3, 1-2) missed a 29-yard field goal try with 6:15 left, and Coppell ran out the clock.

Southlake Carroll 48, Justin Northwest 13

JUSTIN — Quarterback Kenny Hill and receiver Sabian Holmes connected on eight passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns to lead Southlake Carroll over Justin Northwest at Northwest ISD Stadium.

Hill went 22-of-27 for 303 yards and three scores.

Carroll’s A.J. Ezzard scored touchdowns on runs of 1, 28 and 6 yards.

Hebron 36, Lewisville 0

LEWISVILLE — Hebron totaled 487 yards and completed passes to 10 receivers in a runaway victory over Lewisville.

Hebron’s defense held Lewisville to 171 yards and eight first downs while forcing eight punts. Lewisville (2-4, 0-3 District 8-5A) totaled 29 yards on 29 attempts.

Hebron (5-1, 3-0) was led by quarterback Joseph Farley’s 164 yards passing with two touchdowns and 75 yards rushing.

Richardson Berkner 28, W.T. White 19

Fred White had 86 yards and a touchdown on six carries as Richardson Berkner defeated W.T. White at Kedric Couch Field.

Yedediah Louis threw a 7-yard pass to Calvin Jones in the first half for Berkner (3-3, 1-2), then cemented the win in the fourth quarter by rushing for a 7-yard touchdown and running out the clock.

W.T. White (2-4, 0-3) was led by quarterback Ben McKenzie, who was 14-of-27 and threw a 12-yard scoring pass to Randall Taylor. W.T. White’s other scores came on a Troy Dorsey blocked punt recovery in the end zone and a recovered fumble in the end zone by Jaylon Pullen.

Lake Highlands 37, Sunset 6

Jacobi Johnson rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns on just eight carries to lead Lake Highlands (4-2, 3-0 in District 9-5A) over Sunset (1-5, 0-3) at Wildcat-Ram Stadium.

Lake Highlands scored touchdowns on its first four possessions and recorded a safety off a bad punt snap for a 30-0 halftime lead.

Lake Highlands’ Roger Williams rushed for 99 yards and a touchdown, and teammate Tyler Hughes scored on a 64-yard run on his first carry of the game. Trey Gooden had a 15-yard touchdown run for Lake Highlands.

Longview 54, Mesquite 21

MESQUITE — Longview racked up 524 yards of total offense to rout Mesquite at Hanby Stadium.

J’haston Faggans rushed for three touchdowns for Longview (5-1, 1-0 District 11-5A), which scored on its first six possessions and had a 40-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

Mesquite (3-3, 0-1) was led by quarterback Alex Cooper, who passed for 178 yards and two touchdowns before leaving the game with an apparent head injury midway through the third quarter.

Mesquite Horn 55, Tyler Lee 21

TYLER — Quarterback Destri White passed for 206 yards and four touchdowns and senior Devante Harris caught two scoring passes and returned an interception for a touchdown, leading Mesquite Horn over Tyler Lee at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.

Mesquite Horn (2-4, 1-0 District 11-5A) led 21-14 at the end of the first quarter. Thanks to Harris’ interception return and a fumble return by Kamryn Irving that set up a second score, Horn went into halftime with a 42-14 lead.

Marcus White rushed for 195 yards and a touchdown for Tyler Lee (1-5, 0-1). Dalaven Baker scored on an 81-yard run in the loss.
