Flower Mound Marcus outlasts Plano West in four-OT thriller, 51-48
FLOWER MOUND — Drew Hamrick’s second pressure-packed field goal, a 34-yarder in the fourth overtime, gave Flower Mound Marcus a 51-48 win over Plano West in a homecoming night thriller at Marauder Stadium.
Hamrick also kicked a 53-yarder that just barely cleared the cross bar with three seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.
Marcus (6-0, 3-0) remains unbeaten and tied with Allen for the top spot in District 8-5A.
It was the second consecutive four-overtime game for Plano West (4-2, 2-1), which took a 28-25 lead with 3:53 to play in the fourth quarter on Carlos Wiggins’ four-yard touchdown run.
Plano West had a golden opportunity to win in the third overtime when Marcus failed on a two-point conversion try after Harvey Giddens’ 9-yard touchdown run.
But after Travis Korry hit Nathan Orbach with a 23-yard scoring pass in the back right corner of the end zone on fourth down, the Marcus defense stuffed Wiggins on an attempted two-point conversion run up the middle.
Jeff Smiley rushed for 233 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Marcus. Giddens, who left the game early in the second half with an apparent knee injury, came back in overtime and finished with 104 yards and a touchdown.
Wiggins led Plano West with three touchdowns and 155 yards rushing.
