4A roundup for Week 4: Frisco Liberty tops Newman Smith on last-minute TD

CARROLLTON — Izaiah Robinson caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Zach Smith with 23 seconds left in the game as Frisco Liberty rallied to defeat Carrollton Newman Smith, 18-17, in a District 9-4A opener Friday night at Standridge Stadium.

Smith threw for 188 yards but had three interceptions. Robinson led both teams in receiving yards, catching five passes for 116 yards.

Liberty (4-0, 1-0), No. 8 in SportsDay’s Class 4A area rankings, forced Newman Smith (0-4, 0-1) to go three-and-out on its first series and Trey Johnson returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown to put Liberty up 7-0.

But Newman Smith responded with a seven-minute drive capped by a 10-yard touchdown run by quarterback Shawn Holmes. The Trojans took the lead less than a minute later when Ben Higgonbothem intercepted Smith for a 37-yard touchdown.

Newman Smith led 17-7 at halftime, but its offense disappeared in the second half.

Liberty kicked a field goal in the third quarter and got a safety in the fourth before Smith led Liberty downfield and connected with Robinson for the clinching score.

Newman Smith’s Holmes had 121 rushing yards in the loss.

Frisco Centennial 52, Carrollton R.L. Turner 7

FRISCO — Austin Schotts returned the opening kickoff 93 yards and Frisco Centennial (4-0, 1-0) crushed Carrollton R.L. Turner (1-3, 0-1) in District 9-4A on homecoming night.

Centennial, No. 5 in SportsDay’s area Class 4A rankings, scored on its first seven possessions of the game to open a 45-0 halftime lead.

During the first half, quarterback Lamar Jordan threw three touchdown passes and ran for another from 50 yards out. Jordan hooked up on touchdown passes to Zach McCown from 33 yards, Alex Kellum from 9 yards and Darion McMahon from 58 yards.

R.L. Turner was driving deep into Centennial territory for what would have been its first score when Ranthony Texada stepped in front of a pass and returned the interception 95 yards for a touchdown.

R.L. Turner’s lone score came on a 32-yard run by Jahaziel Patterson.

Mansfield Summit 50, Burleson 20

MANSFIELD — Mansfield Summit (3-1, 1-0), No. 16 in SportsDay’s area 4A rankings, bolted to a 36-13 halftime lead and crushed Burleson (2-2, 0-1) in a District 7-4A opener at R.L. Anderson Stadium.

Summit’s speed presented problems for the Burleson defense most of the first half. Summit built a 14-0 lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by Temitope Adegoke and Calvin Burns’ 94-yard run in the first quarter.

Burleson responded with an 84-yard kickoff return by B.J. Mays to the Summit 4, which resulted in Ayinde Alaajiy’s 4-yard touchdown. Summit added touchdown runs of 2 yards by quarterback Ryan Cuevas and 38 yards by Donovan Ellis. Ellis then hauled in a 9-yard scoring pass from Cuevas to give Summit a 36-6 lead in the second quarter.

Burleson’s Colin Seago added a 35-yard run before the half to cut the lead to 36-13.

It was more of Adegoke in the second half as he scored on runs of 1 and 12 yards to cap the scoring for Summit. Adegoke finished with 51 yards on nine carries, but Burns led all rushers with 226 yards on 13 attempts.

The Colony 45, Wichita Falls 37

THE COLONY — Both teams matched trick plays for long touchdowns in their District 4-4A opener, but in the end, Wichita Falls (1-4, 0-1) had no answer for the bruising ground attack of The Colony (3-2, 1-0).

The Colony’s trickery came courtesy of a bounce pass lateral from Garrett Simpson out to receiver Troy Chandler, who collected the ball and threw a 62-yard touchdown bomb to Gerald Thomas.

But Wichita Falls came back with a 50-yard reverse pass from Chance Garey, who also caught two long TDs, to a wide-open Bubba Mathis. Mathis had a game-high 167 receiving yards on nine catches.

But Simpson rushed for 143 yards and running back Bryan Hammond added 102 as The Colony rushed for 340 yards, while the Coyotes had a zero rushing yards.

Everman 35, Crowley 14

CROWLEY — Devynn Birdow threw three touchdown passes to lead Everman (2-1, 1-0) past Crowley (1-3, 0-1) in a District 7-4A opener.

Everman, No. 14 in SportsDay’s Class 4A area rankings, took a 7-0 lead on the game’s opening drive as Birdow connected with Lincoln Richard for a 21-yard touchdown. Everman took advantage of a short field after Crowley’s failed onside kick attempt.

With four seconds remaining in the first half, Everman extended the lead to 13-0 as Pat Small caught a 34-yard scoring pass from Birdow. Horace Richardson made the score 21-0 in the third quarter with a 47-yard touchdown reception.

In the fourth quarter, Everman’s running game took over, as Zach Cowan scored on an 8-yard run and Devin Walker scored from 73 yards out. The Crowley offense, which previously had put up some big numbers on the ground, was held in check by the aggressive Everman defense. After three quarters, Crowley had negative yardage on the ground and finished with just 47 yards.

Larry Cheeks scored on an 8-yard run with little more than two minutes left to put Crowley on the board. After an onside kick, Crowley added another score on a 3-yard pass from Ryan Flynn to Floyd Rogers.

Trophy Club Byron Nelson 28, Birdville 21

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS — Dez’Mon Gassaway caught two touchdown passes in the final 4:21 as Trophy Club Byron Nelson (3-1, 1-0) overtook No. 10 area-ranked Birdville (3-1, 0-1) in a District 5-4A opener at the Birdville ISD complex.

Byron Nelson quarterback Andrew Mitchell passed for 256 yards and four touchdowns, and Mitchell rushed for 71 yards. Gassaway and Chad Loving combined for 11 receptions for 194 yards and four scores.

Gassaway’s tying touchdown came on fourth down at midfield, as he took a quick slant and raced through the Birdville defense. Mitchell hit Ryan Lexa with a 42-yard pass to set up Gassaway’s game-winner with 1:18 to play.

E.A. Northey led Birdville with 168 yards rushing and 133 passing. Northey rushed for 122 yards and three touchdowns in the first half.

Little Elm 51, Wichita Falls Rider 44

WICHITA FALLS — Keaun Kinner ran for 254 yards and two touchdowns and also scored on a 96-yard kickoff return to lead Little Elm (4-1, 1-0) to an overtime victory over Wichita Falls Rider (3-2, 0-1) in the District 4-4A opener for both teams.

Little Elm’s winning touchdown scored when Kinner fumbled in the end zone and Lamont West recovered in overtime.

Matt Marrs also had 183 rushing yards and two touchdowns for Little Elm.

Fort Worth Boswell 31, Azle 14

SAGINAW — Jonathon Epps scored three touchdowns to carry Fort Worth Boswell (2-2, 1-0) past Azle (2-2, 0-1) in District 5-4A. Boswell led, 31-0, entering the fourth quarter before Corbyn Koiner threw two touchdown passes for Azle.

Arlington Seguin 30, Joshua 21

JOSHUA — Arlington Seguin (2-2, 1-0) rushed for 282 yards and used Austen Parker’s 9-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to put away Joshua (0-4, 0-1) in District 7-4A.

Wylie East 35, McKinney North 31

WYLIE — Kevon Mack rumbled into the end zone for a go-ahead 5-yard touchdown with 5:25 to play and the Wylie East defense stiffened in the final minutes to remain unbeaten with a 35-31 victory Friday over McKinney North.

Wylie East (4-0) trailed early as McKinney North (2-2) scored three unanswered touchdowns in the second quarter, all three on scoring runs by running back Trey Smith, who gave his team a 20-7 lead. Smith finished with 138 yards on 14 carries.

Wyle East rallied, countering with its running back tandem of Mack and Jabari Anderson, who combined for 245 yards on 31 carries.

Rockwall-Heath 19, Richardson Pearce 14

RICHARDSON — Quarterback Cody Court tossed a 51-yard touchdown pass to Aramis Fields with just over eight minutes to play to lift Rockwall Heath past Richardson Pearce 19-14 in the District 10-4A opener for both schools at Eagle-Mustang Stadium.

Rockwall Heath (3-1,1-0) jumped out to an early 13-0 advantage behind a seven-yard scoring run by Jovan Hernandez and a pair of Parker Swanson field goals. Richardson Pearce (2-2, 0-1) then clawed its way back into the game as Rhett Svetgoff connected on a five-yard touchdown pass to Corey Coleman just before halftime.

Coleman added a third-quarter one-yard touchdown plunge to give Pearce a 14-13 lead entering the final period. Court then directed a long-march ending with the eventual game-winning pass to Fields.

Pearce, however, did make it interesting driving deep into Rockwall Heath territory before a last-second pass by Svetgoff was intercepted.

Molina 19, Adamson 0

Molina got touchdown runs from Carvon Colton and Miguel Jimenez and a 140-yard performance from Thomas Hughes to shut out Adamson, 19-0, in the teams’ District 11-4A opener at John Kincaid Stadium.

Neither offense could get on track in the first half until Molina (3-1, 1-0) put together a 40-yard scoring drive late in the second quarter. Colton raced down the right sideline for a 20-yard touchdown.

Jimenez’s 24-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter capped a nine-play, 93-yard drive that included four carries by Hughes, one of the area’s Class 4A top rushers with 622 yards for the season.

Molina finished with 198 yards of offense, all on the ground.

Adamson (1-3, 0-1) was limited to 132 yards of offense by the Molina defense, which tallied the game’s last score, an 82-yard interception return by Louis Clifton.

Bryan Adams 55, Thomas Jefferson 0

ADDISON — Bryan Adams spoiled the one-week celebration of Thomas Jefferson’s first win in four years by downing the Patriots 55-0 at Loos Stadium in a District 12-4A matchup.

Last week Thomas Jefferson (1-4, 1-2) ended a 36-game losing streak by downing Fort Worth Diamond Hill Jarvis 19-16. Bryan Adams (2-3, 1-1) quickly put Friday’s upset hopes to a halt by scoring 33 points in the first 13:10 of the contest.

Thomas Jefferson was plagued by five turnovers, which resulted in 33 of Bryan Adams’ first-half points. Bryan Adams also completed its first six pass attempts for 82 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Bryan Adams had just nine net yards rushing in the opening 24 minutes.

Bryan Adams added an exclamation point when Tyus Lewis returned the second-half kickoff 88 yards for another score. The teams played a swift and scoreless fourth period.

Bryan Adams limited Thomas Jefferson to 109 yards of total offense and five first downs. Thomas Jefferson never penetrated past its own 47-yard line, and Bryan Adams fumbled the ball into the end zone twice for touchbacks.

Conrad 30, Spruce 16

SEAGOVILLE — Silas Jefferson had 370 yards of total offense with two rushing and one passing touchdowns to lead Conrad (3-2, 1-0) to a 30-16 victory over Spruce (1-3, 0-1) in a District 12-4A opener at J.R. Henry Stadium.

Woodrow Wilson 29, Hillcrest 7

Quarterback Piers Christian had 328 total yards for Woodrow Wilson in a 29-7 defeat of Hillcrest at Franklin Field.

Texarkana Texas 48, Royse City 7

ROYSE CITY — Texas High stuck to big plays on the ground and through the air, and the defense held Royse City to 95 yards total offense in a 48-7 rout in the District 13-4A opener at Royse City ISD Stadium.

Royse City (0-5, 0-1) took advantage of a late-hit penalty to score in the third quarter on a 3-yard run by Jared Tumbleson to make it 27-7, but Texas High (3-2, 1-0) responded with three touchdowns in a span of four minutes to put the game away.

Corsicana 39, Ennis 7

ENNIS — Corsicana’s Cameron Washington raced 75 yards for a first-quarter Corsicana touchdown. Corsicana (5-0, 3-0) never trailed behind Washington’s 163 yards in the first half, taking a 19-7 lead.

Marcellus Hill led Ennis (2-3, 1-2) in rushing with 81 yards.

Mesquite Poteet 59, Forney 38

MESQUITE — Tanner Ramsey passed for 312 yards and three scores and ran for three more as Mesquite Poteet dominated Forney in a District 15-4A matchup at Mesquite Memorial.

Poteet (5-0, 3-0) took advantage of four turnovers by Forney (1-4, 0-3).

Waxahachie 55, Red Oak 9

WAXAHACHIE — Waxahachie (3-1, 2-0) Christened it’s new Lumpkins Stadium in grand style with a convincing 55-9 victory over Red Oak (2-3, 1-2).

Waxahachie’s Robert Lowe Jr. led the way with 16 carries and 176 yards and three rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Don King III added 252 yards passing and two touchdown passes to Quinn Sargent.

Lancaster 38, West Mesquite 21

LANCASTER — A spectacular all-around performance by quarterback Davon Hodge propelled Lancaster (4-1, 2-1) over District 15-4A rival West Mesquite (0-4, 0-2) 38-21 on Friday night.

Hodge completed 16 of 19 passes for 215 yards and four touchdowns in addition to 62 yards on the ground. His main target, DeMarcus Ayers, accounted for 165 of Hodge’s passing yards, including receiving scores of 60, 32 and 31 yards.

West Mesquite’s freshman quarterback Chason Virgil led the Wranglers’ offense with 224 passing yards and three scores.

Madison 64, Greenville 7

Terry Ross passed for three touchdowns, including two to Derrick Smith, and Earl Adams rushed for a game-high 135 yards and three touchdowns to lead Madison (2-3) to a 64-7 rout of Greenville (0-4) at Pleasant Grove Stadium. It was Greenville’s 14th consecutive loss.
