Last-second field goal seals 4th-quarter comeback for Wylie
GARLAND — Wylie's Seth Hiddink booted a 39-yard field goal as time expired to complete a stunning fourth-quarter comeback as Wylie escaped with a 30-27 victory over Rowlett on Friday night at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.
Hiddink's field goal was his third of the night, and it capped Wylie's 17-point fourth-quarter outburst.
Wylie (2-1), No. 7 in The News' Class 4A rankings, was sparked by running back Victor Jones, who finished with 86 rushing yards and 95 receiving yards. He scored two touchdowns.
Rowlett led, 27-13, when the comeback began.
On Wylie's first fourth-quarter possession, a touchdown drive that cut Rowlett's lead to 27-20, Jones had four touches for 88 yards.
Wylie was forced to punt on its next possession, and Rowlett (1-2) had a chance to run out the clock. But Wylie's Sean Watts recovered a fumble with 4:17 left.
Five plays later, Jones scored on a 6-yard run to tie the score at 27 with 2:00 remaining.
The winning field goal was set up by another Rowlett miscue.
Forced to punt with 48 seconds left, Rowlett had a high snap that was mishandled, giving Wylie the ball at the Rowlett 31. Four plays later, Hiddink booted the game-winner.
Wylie's comeback spoiled a tremendous effort by Rowlett's Jalen Rhodes, who rushed for 181 yards and three touchdowns.
Rowlett defenders Grant Dotsy and Blake Glenn each contributed interceptions that were converted into touchdowns.
