Second-quarter barrage carries Frisco Liberty past Richardson Pearce
MURPHY - A 35-point second-quarter outburst by Frisco Liberty opened the doors for a 70-17 win over Richardson Pearce in a Class 4A Division II playoff game Friday night at Tom Kimbrough Stadium.
Liberty (11-0) advances to play South Oak Cliff in the second round at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mesquite's Hanby Stadium.
Liberty scored five touchdowns in less than 10 minutes in the second quarter to turn a 10-7 deficit into a 42-10 halftime lead. Quarterback Zach Smith did most of the damage during Liberty's barrage, passing for 137 yards and three touchdowns in the second quarter alone. He also rushed for a second-quarter score, and he finished the game with 217 passing yards and four touchdown passes.
Smith was helped by some great catches by his receivers. His first TD pass was a bomb that appeared to be overthrown, but the wind held it up and Malcolm Hill laid out to make the catch for a 7-0 lead.
Smith threw a pair of second-quarter TD passes to Cameron Brown, and in both cases Brown showed good speed and strength to get to the ball and avoid being brought down by defenders. The first went for 24 yards and the second was taken 63 yards into the end zone. Brown finished with six receptions for 118 yards.
Liberty's Jay Ajayi also proved unstoppable for Pearce's overmatched defense, as he carried 15 times for 96 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored on a 14-yard reception, bringing his season touchdown total to 31.
Liberty's Lewis Hill led a strong defensive effort with two interceptions of Pearce quarterback Mac Morse. Liberty's run defense was even better, limiting Pearce (4-7) to seven rushing yards on 17 attempts.
Pearce had momentum ever so briefly in the first quarter, scoring a field goal and touchdown on back-to-back possessions for a 10-7 lead.
Pearce's slim comeback hopes faded when the first snap of the second half went over Morse's head for a safety.
