Poteet rallies, edges Red Oak, 21-20, in overtime
MESQUITE - Mesquite Poteet's Steven Hicks scored on a 5-yard run in overtime as Poteet completed an improbable comeback to knock off previously unbeaten Red Oak, 21-20.
Poteet trailed at halftime, 14-0, but the team's offense came alive in the second half with two touchdowns to force overtime. The tying score came on a 13-yard pass from quarterback Beau Nowell to wide receiver Justin Velasquez with only nine seconds left in regulation. Nowell was 20-of-26 for 153 yards passing in the second half after throwing for only 37 yards in the first half.
Red Oak got the ball first in overtime and regained the lead when running back Ishmael Harrison scored on a 4-yard run. Red Oak had converted a fourth-and-3 with a 22-yard pass from James Satterwhite to Jeremy Brady to set up the score. But the extra-point attempt bounced off the right crossbar, giving Red Oak a 20-14 lead.
Poteet (4-0, 2-0 in 15-4A) took possession and soon faced its own fourth-down play. Nowell picked up a first down on a 2-yard run to the Red Oak 14. Three plays later, Hicks scored the touchdown, and kicker Stewart MacDonnell booted the winning extra point.
Nowell was 29-of-42 passing for 202 yards. He threw one interception and one touchdown. Poteet receiver Justin Velasquez caught 13 passes for 107 yards. Hicks had nine carries for 38 yards and two touchdowns, while teammate Jamarcus Robins was the game's leading rusher with 15 carries for 66 yards.
Red Oak (3-1, 1-1 in 15-4A) alternated quarterbacks Claud Person and James Satterwhite with limited success. Satterwhite completed 11 of 16 passes for 104 yards and threw one interception. Person was 6-of-13 for 73 yards, with one interception and one touchdown.
Red Oak dominated the first half. Red Oak scored a first-quarter touchdown on a 3-yard run by Cameron Bausley and a second-quarter touchdown on a 7-yard pass from Claud Person to Harrison. At the half, Red Oak had a huge advantage in total yardage, 184 yards to 98.
Poteet turned the tables in the third quarter. Red Oak was limited to seven yards in the third quarter until completing a 26-yard pass on the quarter's final play. That big play moved Red Oak deep into Poteet territory to start the fourth quarter, but the drive ended when a Person pass was intercepted by Poteet's Antwone Jackson at the Pirates' 8.
Jackson then collected his second interception when he picked off a Satterwhite pass in the end zone midway through the fourth quarter. Red Oak's Brady appeared to seal a 14-7 win when he intercepted a Nowell pass in the end zone with 2:26 left in the game, but Poteet was able to force a punt and drive for the tying score.
