Denton Guyer and star QB Jerrod Heard rout Birdville en route to 4A semis
DENTON — Denton Guyer quarterback Jerrod Heard took a knee at the 10-yard line, shook hands with nearby Birdville players and strolled off the field.
It was a businesslike conclusion to yet another blowout victory for Guyer, which coasted into the state semifinals with a 53-28 win against Birdville on Monday at Apogee Stadium.
Guyer is averaging a 39.5-point margin of victory in its four playoff wins, and it advanced to face Highland Park in the Class 4A Division I state semis at 1 p.m. Saturday in Allen.
Heard tallied 135 passing yards and a touchdown to go along with 212 rushing yards and two more scores.
Running back DJ Breedlove added 115 yards and three touchdowns.
Guyer (12-2) raced out to a 19-7 lead in the first quarter after Birdville (11-3) fumbled away a kickoff. Breedlove scored his second touchdown just 10 seconds later.
Guyer kept Birdville standout running back Xavier Turner in check for most of the night, limiting him to 124 yards and two scores. Turner broke free for a 58-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter to put Birdville within two scores at 26-14.
Turner finished his senior season with 2,981 yards and 52 touchdowns.
