Softball player of the week (05/12): Celina's Alexis Elizondo

What she did: Elizondo homered in all three games and finished 7-for-13 with five runs and eight RBIs as Celina beat Princeton, two games to one, in a Class 3A Region II quarterfinal. Princeton was ranked fifth in Class 3A. Elizondo singled and scored the tying run during a three-run bottom of the seventh as Celina rallied to win 12-11 in Saturday's Game 3. Celina trailed, 9-2, in that game, but Elizondo hit a three-run home run during a seven-run bottom of the fifth. All of that came after Celina had a 10-1 lead in Game 2 of the series earlier Saturday but saw Princeton rally for a 16-10 win.

Who is she? A senior catcher who has signed with Texas Woman's University. This is Elizondo's first season playing catcher. She was an outfielder before that. Celina coach Billy Coleman said he thinks Elizondo is going to play shortstop in college.

The stats: Elizondo is hitting .480 with 16 doubles and seven triples. She ranks among the Dallas-area leaders with 12 home runs and 66 RBIs.

She said it: "I knew our team could do it. We come back when we really need it. ... Did you know? Elizondo has competed in varsity softball, volleyball, basketball and track and field during her high school career. ... She said she wants to become a radiologist.
