Spring football report: How hard is Cedar Hill's schedule? Assistant coach suggests playing Cowboys too
Team: Cedar Hill
How the 2010 season ended: Cedar Hill shared the 5-5A title with Duncanville, but because it beat Duncanville in district play, the Longhorns were the district’s top seed in the playoffs. After beating Hurst L.D. Bell in the first round of 5A Division II, Cedar Hill lost to eventual state finalist Denton Guyer, 48-35. Cedar Hill finished 8-4.
Key returning starters: Cedar Hill should have an improved defense with the return of six starters and 10 players who were substantial contributors. All-district defensive end David Harris, who had 30 tackles for loss last season, and all-district defensive tackle Darius Stubblefield return. Starting linebackers Steven Taylor and Isaiah Lewis also return to a front seven that won’t be huge but will be very athletic.
On offense, the receiving group should be solid with Shelton Jones returning along with speedy receiver and kick returner LaQuvionte Gonzales, who will get more time at running back. Cedar Hill coach Joey McGuire says “Q” is one of the most explosive athletes he’s coached.
Biggest question facing team: Who’s going to replace Driphus Jackson? It won’t be easy to fill the shoes of the three-year starter, who was last season’s 5-5A MVP and signed with Rice. The job will fall to Andre Anderson, an incoming senior who was an all-district receiver last year, or Damion Hobbs, who was the starter for the junior varsity team that finished 8-2. The player who becomes the backup QB will start at receiver.
Notable: Once again, Cedar Hill plays an exciting, but very challenging, nondistrict schedule. The Longhorns will play Allen at SMU’s Ford Stadium, Denton Guyer at Cowboys Stadium and DeSoto at Kincaide Stadium in Dallas. McGuire joked that one of his assistants asked if Cedar Hill might try to scrimmage the Cowboys during a bye week.
He said it: “We’re going to be as fast or faster than we’ve ever been on defense. It reminds me of the 2006 and 2009 defenses.”
