Spring football report: Shawn Holmes wins Carrollton Newman Smith's QB race
TEAM: Carrollton Newman Smith
HOW THE 2010 SEASON ENDED: The Trojans reached the third round of the Class 4A playoffs last season before losing to Tyler John Tyler, 45-34.
KEY RETURNING STARTERS: Coach Paul Ressa said that the Trojans will be as deep as ever next fall. Newman Smith returns five starters on both offense and defense. Senior-to-be Shawn Holmes returns as a starting cornerback, and Ressa said that he’s moving outside linebacker Allen Melson back to safety. Offensive lineman Cameron Bryant will pave the way up front for Newman Smith’s option offense, and defensive linemen Karl Thomas and Pablo Ortiz will be mainstays on the other side of the ball.
BIGGEST QUESTIONS FACING TEAM: Incoming senior Shawn Holmes (5-11, 180) beat out senior-to-be Tripp Abbott and junior-to-be Zach Rasmussen for the starting quarterback job next fall. The three players had been competing in spring practices for the right to replace outgoing starter Jose Martinez, who led the Trojans last season in passing (2,129 yards, 18 TDs) and ranked second in rushing (757 yards, 7 TDs). Rasmussen (6-3, 185) will back up Holmes at quarterback and will also see playing time at wide receiver. Abbott (5-10, 185) will start at slot receiver as well as be a backup quarterback and see reps on defense at safety. At 6-0, 222 pounds, incoming senior Jerome Akintunde will carry the load at running back with his 4.6-second speed in replacing standout Braxton Bearden from last season. Bearden led Newman Smith in rushing (954 yards, 11 TDs) and receiving (53-735 yards, 9 TDs) last year.
NOTABLES: Newman Smith added Derick Johnson, a transfer from Lancaster, in the off-season. Johnson (5-11, 180) will see time at cornerback and wide receiver. … Because of his transfer last season from Hebron, Rasmussen was forced to play on the Trojans’ junior varsity team (at quarterback) for a year. … Ressa said that Holmes is being recruited by several colleges at cornerback. He said Holmes would be a two-way starter for him next fall but he’ll rest him on defense when needed. … The Trojans will scrimmage Garland at 7 p.m. Aug. 19 at Standridge Stadium in Carrollton. … Seven of Newman Smith’s 10 games next season will be played at its home stadium of Standridge. … Newman Smith is scheduled to play a Thursday night game four times next season (Aug. 25, Sept. 8, Oct. 6 and Oct. 13). … Newman Smith finished last season by winning six out of its last eight games after struggling early in the year because of several injured players out of the lineup.
HE SAID IT: “We’ll try to model what we did the last couple of years here. We have so many kids out here now it’s awesome. We’re getting to a point where we are not using as many kids two ways.” – Carrollton Newman Smith football head coach Paul Ressa
