High School soccer playoff roundup: TC Byron Nelson advances on PKs, FM Marcus weathers delay
Trophy Club Byron Nelson moved on in the playoffs on Thursday night, beating Wichita Falls, 2-1, on penalty kicks in a Class 4A Region II sectional match at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.
TC Byron Nelson outscored Wichita Falls 4-3 on penalty kicks to claim the win and will face the winner of Cleburne-Mansfield Summit in next week’s Region I semifinals.
Delays halting matches: Thursday’s weather put several teams into holding patterns with Plano West-Garland Lakeview Centennial and Mesquite Poteet-Lovejoy postponed until Friday.
Plano West and Garland Lakeview Centennial were tied 2-2 with under 13 minutes left when play was stopped. The match will resume at 6 p.m. Friday at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.
Poteet led Lovejoy, 2-0, before play suspended with 37:23 left in the second half. The teams will pick up where they left off at 5 p.m. today at Wildcat-Ram Stadium.
Wichita Falls Rider 1, Denton 0: Denton lost a tough defensive match in a Class 4A Region I game in Wichita Falls.
Coppell 4, Mansfield 0: Class 5A defending state champion Coppell (20-1-2) was dominating in an area-round victory over Mansfield. Coppell’s Roberto Arguello scored by setting himself up off a nifty move from 15 yards out in the 10 minute. Justin Todd scored twice to give his team a three-goal lead in the first 30 minutes in a start delayed an hour because of lightning.
Coppell took a 2-0 lead in the 24 minute as Todd put in a header from five yards out on a well-executed throw-in pass from junior Austin Michaelis. Coppell substituted liberally in the second half, but sophomore goalie Eric Benenson kept his shutout. Senior Mitchell Apple scored the final goal with 2:55 left on a rebound shot that ricocheted in off the crossbar.
FM Marcus 1, Belton 0: Flower Mound Marcus scored late and survived an 80-minute weather delay to advance in a Class 5A Region I area match at Midlothian
Marcus (13-4-5) had trouble solving a tough Belton defense for most of the match but broke through with 16 minutes left on a goal by Natalie Schmutz off an assist by Julissa Depaoli.
The match was delayed because of bad weather with 7:56 remaining, but Marcus was able to hold on for the win.
“Belton was very organized and they played us well,” Flower Mound coach Chad Hobbs said. “But we kept to our mind-set of keeping possession and taking advantage of the chances we got, and we finally put one away.”
Marcus will face Coppell, a 1-0 winner over Mansfield, in the Region I quarterfinals next week.
Denton Guyer 1, Wichita Falls 0: Denton Guyer moved to the Class 4A Region I sectionals, scoring with under 10 minutes to play.
Guyer (17-2-3) broke a scoreless tie with nine minutes remaining on a goal by Sophie Martin.
Martin nearly left the match three minutes earlier after a collision but stayed in to provide the winning tally.
Guyer will face the winner of Burleson Centennial-Fort Worth Arlington Heights next week.
