Soccer playoffs: FM Marcus boys rally; Carroll girls dominate
The Flower Mound Marcus boys used a three-goal second half to power their comeback in a 3-1 win over Irving in Friday’s Class 5A bi-district playoff match at Irving Schools Stadium.
Marcus (16-1-4) trailed 1-0 at the half on a goal by Irving’s Gerber Chavez, but got a pair of goals from Hank Steinhafel and an Irving own goal to take control of the match.
“We got the wind in the second half and tweaked some things on offense as well,” Marcus coach John Gall said.
Duncanville 7, Killeen Ellison 1: Duncanville used a six-goal second half to break open a close match. Duncanville scored four times in the opening 20 minutes of the second half.
Duncanville got two goals from Chris Escalara in the win and is 19-1-2.
Rockwall 4, South Garland 1: Ryan Danahy scored two goals for Rockwall in its win. Rockwall (18-3-2) led 2-0 at the half, getting goals from Clay Rittershaus and Danahy.
Rockwall will face Richardson Pearce, a 2-1 winner over Plano, in next week’s area round.
Lake Highlands 1, McKinney 0: Wes Osborn scored the match-winning goal for Lake Highlands. Osborn’s goal came midway through the second half for Lake Highlands (16-1-4 overall).
Frisco Liberty 1, Sulphur Springs 0: Frisco Liberty’s Stian Sandbekkhaug scored with less than 10 minutes play to power Liberty’s win over Sulphur Springs in a 4A area-round playoff match.
Liberty (22-1-0 overall) had plenty of chances in the contest, firing off 28 shots and having a pair of shots ring off the post before Sandbekkhaug’s winning tally in the second half.
Liberty will face Frisco Heritage in the next round.
Frisco Wakeland 5, The Colony 1: Frisco Wakeland had five players score goals in its win in a 4A area-round match. Wakeland (18-4-2) led 3-0 at the half, paced by Corey Cantor’s 22nd goal of the year.
Southlake Carroll 5, Arlington Lamar 0: Southlake Carroll’s Grace Cory posted two goals, including one just 17 seconds into the match. Cory’s quick strike helped Carroll (20-1-1) build a 3-0 halftime lead.
Carroll will face Odessa in the next round of the playoffs, with the match set for Shotwell Stadium in Abilene next Friday.
Hebron 6, Hurst L.D. Bell 2: Hebron rallied from an early deficit in the Class 5A bi-district contest. Hebron (17-2-2) trailed 1-0 in the opening five minutes, but scored three straight goals to close out the opening half for a 3-1 edge.
Chelsee Washington and Ried Sibley each had two goals in the win, with Washington scoring the game-winner off a corner kick with two minutes left in the first half.
Wylie East 4, Crandall 1: Wylie East never trailed in the Class 4A Region II area-round match against Crandall, scoring twice in each half.
Wylie East (19-1-1) scored two minutes into the match and got the match-winning goal from Addie McCain with 16 seconds left in the opening half. Asia Revely added two goals in the victory, with Valiree Morris also scoring.
Wylie East will face Lovejoy in the Region II quarterfinals, with Lovejoy being the only team to beat Wylie East this season.
