4A Region II soccer tournament: Poteet boys oust North Dallas; HP girls dominate Waxahachie

CARROLLTON — Mesquite Poteet forwards Carlos Cardenas and Charles Ojeda carry the load when it comes to scoring goals.

But on Friday night it was Sammy Duarte who claimed the spotlight in a 4A Region II semifinal against North Dallas.

The junior central attacking midfielder — who entered the game with six goals all season — scored twice in Poteet’s 3-2 victory at Standridge Stadium.

Poteet (22-1-3) scored all of its goals in the first half, and Duarte’s 33rd-minute goal proved to be the game’s decisive moment.

“I was just in the right place at the right time,” Duarte said. “I usually sit back and distribute to the forwards. If I can’t do that, I’ll make a run.”

Poteet, which will play in its first regional final since 2009, will face Kilgore at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. A trip to next weekend’s state tournament in Georgetown is at stake.

Duarte’s first goal came after a low cross from Cardenas in the eighth minute.

North Dallas (21-4-1) took control of the half at that point, and after a series of chances, forward Edwin Castellanos tied the game with his 23rd-minute goal.

Poteet, which uses an aggressive 3-5-2 formation, followed up with two scores very much against the run of play.

Cardenas scored a nifty goal by flicking the ball over North Dallas goalkeeper Miguel Reyes and then slotting it home. Less than a minute later Duarte found the back of the net for his second goal of the night.

“He had just the right amount of touch to put that in and not put it over,” Poteet coach Colby Peek said. “Every game someone different steps up, and tonight it was Sammy.”

Kilgore 1, Frisco Wakeland 0: Wakeland was the better side for the final 65 minutes of its 4A Region II semifinal, but it couldn't capitalize on a multitude of chances against Kilgore.

Jose Rico scored on an empty net after Wakeland goalkeeper Ben Hale came off his line and parried a shot away during the 13th minute.

Wakeland (18-8-4) controlled the run of play the rest of the way but was stymied time and again by Kilgore goalkeeper Juan Perales.

Kilgore (22-3-4), which advances to face Mesquite Poteet in the final, managed only one shot on goal in the second half.

Wylie 5, Mabank 1: Wylie scored two goals inside of a minute to polish off a decisive victory against Mabank in a 4A Region II semifinal.

Casey Mize powered home a goal from the corner of the penalty box during the 63rd minute, and Addie Ault followed it quickly with her second goal of the game.
