Soccer playoffs roundup: First-half goal holds up for Duncanville boys in 1-0 win

North Dallas, Poteet boys advance; Allen, Grapevine girls win

Eloy Aravelo’s first-half goal was the difference in Duncanville’s 1-0 win Friday in a Class 5A Region I area playoff match against Flower Mound at Pennington Field in Bedford.

The game’s lone goal came midway through the first half. Aravelo eluded several defenders on a nice run before scoring.

The defense did its job for Duncanville (19-3-4) as goalkeeper Josh Nieto racked up nine saves for the team’s 15th shutout of the season.

“Both teams were so evenly matched. It went back and forth between us,” Duncanville coach Nuno Passos said. “It was a total team effort tonight, and we were able to hold on and win.”

Boys

Hebron 3, Midlothian 2 (2 OT): Hebron's Armando Pelaez scored in the first overtime, helping Hebron to a double-overtime win in a Class 5A Region I area-round playoff game at Dragon Stadium in Southlake.

Jesuit 2, Rockwall 0: Jesuit scored a goal in both halves and held on for a win in its Class 5A Region II area playoff match at Eagle Stadium in Allen. Jesuit (16-4-2) grabbed the lead just four minutes into the match and added a score on a penalty kick in the second half.

North Dallas 4, Samuell 0: North Dallas (20-3-1) reached the regional quarterfinals for the fifth straight year, defeating Samuell in a Class 4A Region II sectional match at Kincaide Stadium.

Mesquite Poteet 5, Forney 4: Charles Ojeda scored the game-winning goal — his third tally of the game — with six minutes left to play in a Class 4A Region II sectional match at Homer B. Johnson Stadium in Garland. Poteet (20-1-3) led 4-1 at halftime and survived a wild comeback by Forney, which tied the score at 4 with 16 minutes left to play.

Southlake Carroll 1, El Paso Bel Air 0: Duncan Gary's goal off a corner kick from Brad Rostron with 20 minutes left gave Carroll (20-4-4) the winning score in a Class 5A Region I area playoff match at Midland's Grande Communication Stadium.

Girls

Grapevine 1, Midlothian 0 (SO): Grapevine had a 6-5 edge in a shootout for a thrilling win in its Class 5A Region I area match at Dragon Stadium in Southlake. Grapevine (19-4-4) was perfect in the shootout. Tori Sledge put away the game-winner. Goalkeeper Reilly Ott stopped Midlothian's final try to end the match.

Allen 1, Rockwall 0: Emily Niece scored with 18 minutes left as Allen (14-7-3) won a Class 5A Region II area game. Niece's goal came courtesy of a cross by Allen's Hailey Jensen.

Mansfield 1, Coppell 0 (SO): Mansfield claimed a 4-2 edge in a shootout and defeated Coppell in a Class 5A Region I area match at Mansfield's Newsome Stadium. Mansfield (22-3-0) got shootout goals from Lindsay Schneider, Marcy Schengber, Sidney LeRoy and Taylor King, with goalkeeper Sydney Newton stopping three of Coppell's five shootout tries.

McKinney 1, Mesquite Horn 0: McKinney (14-7-0) controlled the pace for much of the match and got its lone goal from Catherine Millar in the 28th minute of the first half in a Class 5A Region II area-round win against Horn at Clark Stadium in Plano.

Southlake Carroll 4, El Paso Franklin 0: Southlake Carroll notched its school-record 26th win, shutting out Franklin in a Class 5A Region II area playoff match at Midland's Grande Communication Stadium. Julia Dyche led Carroll (26-2) with two first-half goals.

Hebron 2, Duncanville 0: Hebron (16-3-3) broke through with second-half goals by Ellen Starnes and Reid Sibley to secure a shutout win in a Class 5A Region I area playoff match at Hebron.
