Soccer playoff roundup: Flower Mound boys roll; Carroll, Coppell girls advance
CARROLLTON — Nick Base scored a pair of goals Friday, helping Flower Mound to a 4-1 victory over Irving Nimitz in a Class 5A Region I bi-district playoff match at Standridge Stadium.
The match was originally set for Thursday, but because of a miscommunication, no officials showed up. Despite the delay, Flower Mound (10-6-6) got off to a fast start and stayed in control.
Tyler Wettstein and Dru Robinson also had goals for Flower Mound, with Eduardo Hernandez scoring for Nimitz.
Flower Mound will draw Duncanville in the next round.
Highland Park 3, Prosper 1: In Plano, big plays on offense and defense powered Highland Park to a two-goal win in a 4A Region II area round match.
Highland Park (10-6-0) picked up a pair of goals in the first half, but the biggest play came from goalkeeper Conner Hayward, who made a save on a penalty kick try by Prosper midway through the half.
“That was such a big play, and our energy level really picked up after that,” Highland Park coach Randy Allen said. “The guys did a great job attacking and moving the ball.”
Highland Park’s David Uhr had the game-winning goal, with Grant Kreeger and Will Sanders also scoring.
Highland Park next plays the winner of the Frisco Liberty-Sulphur Springs.
Lake Highlands 1, Plano East 0: In Richardson, Lake Highlands’ Christian Cedillo provided the lone goal, pacing a shutout win over Plano East in a 5A Region II bi-district match.
Cedillo’s winner came midway through the second half, as he put away a rebound off an indirect kick for Lake Highlands.
“Christian’s goal was big,” Lake Highlands coach Haines Brindley said, “and our defense stepped up against a pretty good Plano East team.”
Lake Highlands advances to face North Mesquite, with the match set for 7 p.m. at Wildcat-Ram Stadium next Friday.
Frisco Heritage 3, Little Elm 2: In Prosper, Frisco Heritage got a pair of goals from Brandon Beach for a narrow victory over Little Elm in a 4A Region II area playoff.
Heritage also got a goal from Brad Dweck, with Little Elm’s goals coming from Tevin Beckwith and Mauricio Rosas.
Heritage will face Frisco Wakeland in the next round.
Molina 5, West Mesquite 2: Molina’s offense came to life in the second half, putting away four goals in a 4A Region II area victory at Kincaide Satdium.
Molina’s Jesus Parades had a pair of goals, with Inmar Rosales, Alan Navarro and Rodriquez Rodrigio also scoring.
Molina advances to take on Kaufman in the next round.
Sulphur Springs 3, Frisco Liberty 2 (2OT): In Frisco, Sulphur Springs scored on a penalty kick to force overtime and scored the game-winner with three minutes left in the second OT of the 4A Region II area match.
Liberty (20-4-1) rallied with second-half goals by Vince Koch and Zach Tiongson to take a 2-1 lead with under 10 minutes to play.
Arlington Sam Houston 2, Keller 1: In Bedford, Arlington Sam Houston got goals from Miguel Alvarez and T. J. Marino to power a hard-fought win over Keller in a 5A Region I bi-district match.
Sam Houston (20-1-3) got both its goals early in the first half and made that cushion stand up.
Kyle Russell scored the lone goal for Keller (13-5-4).
Sam Houston moves on to face the winner of the match between El Paso Americas and Midland Lee in the next round.
Duncanville 2, Killeen Ellison 0: In Waco, Duncanville survived a tough opening half and broke a scoreless tie with second-half goals from Luis Benavides and Eric Campos in a 5A Region I bi-district match.
“We had to weather the storm in the first half in playing into the wind,” said Duncanville coach Nuno Passos.
Duncanville (18-3-4) next will face Flower Mound.
Southlake Carroll 2, Arlington Lamar 1: In Southlake, Carroll’s Jake Parrish and Andrew Baker scored in a close 5A Region I bi-district win.
Carroll led 1-0 at the half on the score by Baker, with Parrish putting Carroll up 2-0 with 26 minutes left.
Carroll will take on El Paso Bel Air in the next round.
Southlake Carroll 3, Arlington Lamar 0: In Southlake, Southlake Carroll gave its fans plenty to cheer about in its 5A Region II bi district victory over Arlington Lamar.
Carroll (25-2-0) never trailed, getting the game-winning goal from Grace Cory in the first half. Meghan Murphy and Sophie Groff added goals in the second half.
Carroll will face the winner of El Paso Franklin vs. Odessa Permian in the next round.
Coppell 4, Euless Trinity 0: In Southlake, Coppell put up bookend two-goal halves, picking up a decisive win over Euless Trinity in a 5A Region I bi-district match.
Coppell led 2-0 at the half on goals from Cami Studebaker and Paige Jacobs.
Sarah King and Liat Even also had goals for Coppell.
Coppell will face Mansfield in the next round, with the match tentatively set for 7 p.m. next Friday at Mansfield’s Newsom Stadium.
Flower Mound Marcus 6, Carrollton R.L. Turner 1: In Flower Mound, Flower Mound Marcus took command of its 5A Region I bi-district match with R.L. Turner early, scoring five times in the opening half en route to a decisive victory.
Marcus got a pair of goals from Natalie Schmutz.
FM Marcus will draw Waco Midway in the next round.
