UIL state tourney roundup: N. Shore wins 5A title; Mumford ends run with Div. I title; Water Valley wins D-II

AUSTIN — Jarrey Foster had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Galena Park North Shore controlled Converse Judson from the start to win the Class 5A state championship, 57-45, Saturday night.

Kerwin Roach scored 15 and had three dunks as former NBA All-Star Shaquille O’Neal watched from the front row. North Shore (35-3) broke the game open in the third, outscoring Judson 13-5 in the quarter for a 39-25 lead.

Judson (37-2), which finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the state, showed some life in the early moments of the fourth behind consecutive 3-pointers from Julian Erickson. North Shore answered the burst with seven straight points, including a steal and dunk by Roach that pushed the lead to 48-31.

AUSTIN — Game MVP LaKendric Hyson scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Mumford won the Class A Division I state championship by beating Muenster, 64-57, on Saturday.

It was the 37th straight victory for Mumford (39-1), which was a state runner-up the last two seasons. Muenster (28-3) outrebounded Mumford 49-33, but Mumford made 18 of 26 free throws while Muenster was 7-for-7.

Mumford trailed 17-9 after one quarter but used a 22-11 run in the second quarter to take a 31-28 halftime lead. The Mustangs extended the lead to 46-38 after three quarters.

Lyndon Cook led Muenster with 17 points and 26 rebounds.

Water Valley 68, Laneville 44: Trae Hannon scored 16 points, and Water Valley cruised to the Class A Division II championship.

Four Water Valley players scored in double figures. Kellan Kirkland had 14 points and 11 rebounds as Water Valley outrebounded Laneville 43-25. Brock Demere and Cameron Copley each scored 13.

Water Valley (29-5) was 11-of-15 shooting in the third quarter as it stretched a 30-25 halftime lead to 55-37 by the end of the third. Water Valley made seven 3-pointers.

Kendrick Anderson scored 13 points for Laneville (33-7). Dontavious Harris, who scored 30 points and made eight 3-pointers in a semifinal victory, attempted just five against Water Valley and finished with nine points.
