Madison ousts Frisco Lone Star; punches return ticket to Austin for 3A state tournament
COMMERCE — Cameron Bryant and Admon Gilder each scored 18 points, and defending Class 3A state champion Madison earned a trip back to the state tournament by beating Frisco Lone Star, 72-44, in the 3A Region II final Saturday at Texas A&M-Commerce.
Jonathan Turner scored 16 points, and Roderick Johnson added 11 for Madison (28-3), which next week will try to win its third state title in six years. Cameron Gooden scored 11 points for Lone Star (26-7), which made the deepest playoff run in the brief history of the school.
Leading 31-26 at halftime, Madison opened the second half on a 7-0 run. Lone Star cut the lead to 40-31 before Madison scored the next six points for a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
Kennedale 70, Stephenville 39: After the score was tied at halftime, Kennedale (38-0) outscored Stephenville, 45-14, in the second half to win the 3A Region I final. V.J. Hughes led Kennedale with 19 points.
Ponder 50, Brock 48: With the score tied, Ponder senior Josh Peterson pulled down a defensive rebound on an attempted game-winning shot, and he was fouled with 0.89 seconds on the clock. Peterson stepped to the line for a one-and-one and made both free throws, giving Ponder the win in the 2A Region II final.
“I tried to relax myself and be calm,” said Peterson, who finished with 12 points. “That’s all that was in my mind was just one [free throw].”
Ponder (30-7) will play in the state tournament in Austin for the first time since 2010, when the Lions won their third straight 2A state title. Brock defeated Ponder in the regional final last year before finishing as the 2A runner-up.
Ponder trailed by three entering the fourth quarter, but freshman Chase Harris made two of his four 3-pointers in the final quarter on his way to finishing with 16 points.
That was key, as Brock held Clay Morgan to 13 points after he scored 33 on Friday.
