DeSoto regroups in third quarter against Lubbock Coronado for berth in Region I title game
FORT WORTH -- Chris Dyer watched with dismay as his Eagles' 19-point lead shriveled to 10.
After the DeSoto coach called a timeout, his team responded by scoring the final eight points of the third quarter.
DeSoto breezed from that point for a 55-38 victory over Lubbock Coronado in the first of two Class 5A Region I semifinals Friday night at TCU’s Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
“We just relaxed too much,’’ Dyer said of the three-minute stretch when Coronado reeled off nine straight points. “We got back on our heels.’’Senior guard Takedrick Brown (19 points) helped snap DeSoto (30-3) from the doldrums with two baskets in the Eagles’ closing run.
It was also Brown that created separation by scoring nine points in the final three minutes of the first period.
Terry Maston (18 points) worked well with a height advantage on the inside. The Eagles' clinging man-to-man defense continued its stingy playoff ways.
Opponents are averaging only 40 points.
Trey Culver led Coronado (26-7) with 13 points. The Lubbock team struggled at the free throw line (10 of 23).
