Triple A Academy will not forfeit 4 district wins as UIL overturns prior ruling

The University Interscholastic League’s State Executive Committee voted 3-1 on Monday that Triple A Academy’s boys basketball team will not be required to forfeit four district wins for using unregistered officials.

The decision overrules last Wednesday’s 11-3A District Executive Committee ruling that Triple A should forfeit all of its home district games. If the ruling had been upheld, Triple A (20-6) would have played District 12-3A winner Melissa in the bi-district round of the playoffs and could have seen district rival Madison – the defending 3A champions – in the third round.

Instead, Triple A (20-6) will be the district’s second seed and face Princeton, 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mesquite Poteet.  Roosevelt falls to the third seed and will play Bonham, while Wilmer-Hutchins will be the fourth seed and face District 12-3A champ Melissa, 7:30 Tuesday at Frisco Lone Star.

The 11-3A DEC had asked for the forfeits after it was discovered that Triple A was using a group of referees that were not officially registered with the UIL. The school believed it had been using crews assigned from the Fort Worth Basketball Officials Association. Instead, the contact person Triple A had been dealing with was not an assigner with the Fort Worth chapter, and was putting crews together with several non-registered referees.

“It’s been a long, drawn-out process,” Triple A Academy founder Leroy McClure said. “Thank God it’s over and that they ruled in our favor.”
