Basketball replay: Big run gives Guyer boys a share of first place in 5-4A

GAME OF THE NIGHT

An 18-0 run over the third and fourth quarters propelled the Denton Guyer boys to a 53-38 win over Trophy Club Byron Nelson, the state’s 23rd-ranked Class 4A team.

The win left Guyer (14-9, 8-2) tied with Byron Nelson (19-7, 8-2) for first place in District 5-4A. Guyer avenged a 62-47 loss to Byron Nelson earlier in district play.

Guyer trailed by three before its 18-point run gave it a 15-point lead. Guyer held Byron Nelson to 11 points in the second half.

Miles Crawford led Guyer with 13 points and Joshua Jordan added 11. Byron Nelson’s Emmanuel Nzekwesi scored 17, including 11 in the first quarter.

Duncanville is No. 1

Louisiana Tech signee Tiara Davenport scored 20 points as the Duncanville girls beat Grand Prairie, 89-13, and clinched the No. 1 seed in the playoffs from District 7-5A. Duncanville (27-0, 12-0), the defending Class 5A state champion and the state’s No. 1-ranked team, extended its winning streak to 97 games.

Carroll wins 4-5A

Colorado pledge Kennedy Leonard scored 15 points as the Southlake Carroll girls (25-4, 12-0) clinched the No. 1 seed from 4-5A with a 69-32 victory over second-place Keller (20-6, 10-2). Carroll, ranked seventh in the state in 5A, led 22-8 after one quarter against a Keller team that could have tied for the district lead with a win.

Texas A&M signee Alex Robinson scored 28 points for the Mansfield Timberview boys against DeSoto, the state’s second-ranked 5A team. But Baylor signee Terry Maston scored 17 points to lead DeSoto to a 77-66 win. The victory, coupled with Duncanville’s 47-46 loss to Grand Prairie, gave DeSoto (22-3, 9-1) a two-game lead over Duncanville and South Grand Prairie in District 7-5A. … The Euless Trinity boys, ranked seventh in the state in 5A, trailed by two entering the fourth quarter before beating Irving Nimitz, 58-54. Trinity is one game ahead of Irving MacArthur in 6-5A. … The Argyle girls, ranked No. 2 in the state in 3A, outscored Frisco Lone Star, 13-1, in the fourth quarter and rallied for a 45-35 win. Argyle is 28-1 overall and 6-0 in 10-3A.

D.J. Hogg, Plano West, forward: Scored 29 points as Plano West (17-5, 6-0 in 10-5A), the state's fourth-ranked 5A team, beat McKinney, 77-54.

Broderick Perkins, Plano, guard: Scored 18 points in a 55-46 win vs. Plano East, the state's 25th-ranked 5A team.

Kelton Davis, North Crowley, forward: Scored 17 in a 78-68 win vs. Arlington Bowie, the state's 15th-ranked 5A team. Bowie (21-4, 9-1) fell into a tie with Arlington Martin for first place in 3-5A.

Xavier Adams, Flower Mound Marcus, forward: The New Mexico signee scored 24 points as Marcus (21-3, 5-1) rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit and beat Coppell, 48-43. Marcus, ranked 14th in the state in 5A, is tied with Hebron for first in District 5-5A.

Jeremy Combs, Carter, forward: The North Texas signee scored 29 points in a 73-35 win vs. North Dallas.

Brock Anders and Nolan Taylor, Keller: Anders scored 22 points, and Taylor had 21 points and 13 rebounds as Keller beat Southlake Carroll, 78-70, and maintained a one-game lead in 4-5A over Justin Northwest and Keller Fossil Ridge.

Drew Norman, Lakehill, guard: Scored 34 in an 82-67 win vs. HSAA.

Natalie Chou, Plano West, guard: The sophomore scored 33 points as District 10-5A leader Plano West (22-4, 8-0), the state's ninth-ranked 5A team, beat McKinney, 65-55, in overtime. McKinney's Mika Stutts scored on a putback at the regulation buzzer to force overtime. Arkansas signee Mariah Mitchell scored 30 for McKinney (18-9, 5-3).

Cierra Johnson, Hurst L.D. Bell, guard: The UT-Arlington signee scored 30 points as L.D. Bell (23-2, 11-1 in 6-5A), the state's 23rd-ranked 5A team, beat Carrollton R.L. Turner, 88-17.

Tana Driver, Irving MacArthur, point guard: Scored 25 as MacArthur (21-5, 10-2) beat Colleyville Heritage, 64-47, and remained one game behind 6-5A leader L.D. Bell.

Jada Calloway, Denton Guyer, forward: Made a 3-pointer with five seconds left in overtime to give Guyer a 52-51 win over Trophy Club Byron Nelson and no worse than the No. 2 playoff seed from 5-4A.

Rebekah Hand, Argyle Liberty Christian, guard: Scored 23 to lead the state's sixth-ranked large private school to a 52-49 win over No. 3 Plano Prestonwood Christian.

Jaileen Thomas, Richardson Berkner, guard: Scored 33 in a 78-46 victory over Sunset.

Jalah Walton, Lincoln, forward: Followed up Friday's 35-point performance by scoring 30 in an 80-40 win against Hillcrest.

40: Points scored by Zach Postema for Grapevine Faith Christian in a 108-88 win vs. Fort Worth Christian. He made 10 3-pointers and had seven rebounds.

32: Points scored by Ashten Bloom for the Frisco Liberty boys in a 67-61 win over Frisco Heritage, the state's seventh-ranked 4A team. Bloom hit six 3-pointers. It was the first district loss for Heritage (19-3, 9-1), which now leads 9-4A by one game over Prosper.

18: Rebounds by Micayla Buckner for the Garland Naaman Forest girls in a 60-39 win vs. Rowlett. The Baylor signee added 16 points and 10 assists for a triple-double.
