Basketball replay: Irving boys shock state-ranked Trinity, 37-36

GAME OF THE NIGHT

Irving rallied from a 17-0 second-quarter deficit, with R.J. Wills hitting a layup with 2.5 seconds left in a 37-36 win over Euless Trinity, the state’s sixth-ranked Class 5A boys team.

Kishion Mitchell hit a 3-pointer with 1:02 left, giving Irving its first lead of the game. Trinity’s 5-star post player, Myles Turner, answered with a 3-pointer with nine seconds left, giving Trinity a one-point lead and setting up Wills' last-second heroics.

Trinity (16-6, 5-1) is tied with Irving MacArthur for first place in District 6-5A, one game ahead of Irving. Turner had seven points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Irving guard Nelson Villatoro led all scorers with 14 points, including five key fourth-quarter free throws.

State powers fall

Brock Anders and Kyle Tanner each scored 16 points to help the Keller boys to a 55-47 win vs. Justin Northwest, the state’s fifth-ranked 5A team. It left Keller and Northwest tied with Keller Fossil Ridge for first in District 4-5A. … Tyler Williams scored 19 to lead the Hebron boys to a 56-41 win vs. Lewisville, the state’s eighth-ranked 5A team.

Big win for Irving

Tierra Needum scored 14 points as the Irving girls beat Euless Trinity, 54-53. It was a signature win for new Irving coach Vance Hughes, who made two trips to the state tournament while at Kennedale.

While Irving improved to 3-5 in District 6-5A, Trinity fell out of a tie for first. Trinity, Irving MacArthur and Colleyville Heritage are 6-2 in district and one game behind Hurst L.D. Bell.

Texas signee Ariel Atkins scored 20 points as the defending 5A state champion Duncanville girls beat South Grand Prairie, 61-36, and extended their winning streak to 93 games. …

Jordan Box scored 19 and Wesley Franklin added 16 as the Frisco Heritage boys beat Prosper, 72-66, and remained alone in first in 9-4A. Prosper entered Tuesday just one game behind the state's eighth-ranked 4A team. ...

In a matchup between one of the state's best teams and one of the area's best players, the Kimball boys beat Jeremy Combs and Carter, 74-52. Kimball, ranked 10th in the state in 4A, got 18 points from Trent Brinkley. Combs, a North Texas signee, scored 19 for Carter. ...

The Flower Mound Marcus boys, ranked 19th in the state in 5A, were tied with Flower Mound entering the fourth quarter after a 17-4 run by Flower Mound in the third quarter. But New Mexico signee Xavier Adams finished with 21 points as Marcus claimed a 64-59 win.

Keenan Evans, Richardson Berkner, guard: The Texas Tech pledge scored 21 points, including eight in the final quarter, as the state's 12th-ranked 5A team rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit and beat Richardson, 66-63, in a battle for first in 9-5A.

Matthew McQuaid and Omar Sherman, Duncanville: Both scored 11 points in a 51-49 win over South Grand Prairie, the state's second-ranked 5A team. SGP missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Julian Green, DeSoto, forward: Had 15 points and 10 rebounds as DeSoto (18-3, 5-1), the state's third-ranked 5A team, beat Grand Prairie, 52-31, and took over sole possession of first in District 7-5A.

King McClure, Triple A Academy, guard: Scored 33 points as Triple A, the state's fourth-ranked 3A team, beat No. 8 Wilmer-Hutchins, 90-83. Tyler Singleton added 28 points for Triple A. Triple A won the Class A Division I state championship last season before moving up to 3A.

Elijah Thomas, Lancaster, post: Scored 24 points as the state's fifth-ranked 4A team beat Ennis, 67-48, and moved into a tie with Arlington Seguin for first place in District 15-4A. Seguin lost to Mansfield Lake Ridge, 56-48.

GIRLS

Morgan Easley, Flower Mound Marcus, forward: Scored 21 points to lead Marcus (21-2, 4-0), the state's fifth-ranked 5A team, to a 53-37 win over Flower Mound (13-10, 3-1) in a battle for first place in District 5-5A.

Sara Williamson, Rockwall, guard: Had 13 points and seven rebounds as Rockwall beat Mesquite Horn, 42-31, leaving the teams tied for the lead in District 12-5A. Hannah Clark added 12 points and eight rebounds for Rockwall (19-7, 6-1), which outscored Horn, 15-4, in the fourth quarter.

Gretchen Morrison, Southlake Carroll, guard: The Jacksonville State signee scored 27 as Carroll (21-4, 8-0 in 4-5A), the state's ninth-ranked 5A team, beat Keller Central, 72-28.

Azia Wilson, Adamson, guard: Had 27 points, six rebounds and six steals in a 53-45 win against Seagoville. Wilson hit four 3-pointers.

Austin Grandstaff, Rockwall: The Oklahoma State pledge scored 31 points in a 70-55 loss to Mesquite Horn. Bryston Cummings led Horn with 20 points.

GIRLS

Mariah Mitchell, McKinney: The Arkansas signee scored 24 points to lead McKinney to a 56-41 win over Allen. Both teams are 2-2 in District 10-5A.

400: Career wins for Plano West boys coach Anthony Morgan after a 61-39 win vs. Plano. He is in his eighth season as the coach at Plano West and is in his 18th season as a head coach.

9: Three-pointers made by Rashaan Johnston for Faith Family Academy in an 84-32 win vs. Eustace. He scored 35 points.

74: Margin of victory for the Skyline girls in an 84-10 win vs. W.T. White. On the boys side, Madison won by 73 (112-39 vs. Irving North Hills) and South Oak Cliff won by 71 (101-30 vs. North Dallas).

19: Points scored in the second quarter by Deondre Burns for the Carrollton Newman Smith boys in an 82-78 overtime win over Mesquite Poteet. Burns finished with 24 points as Newman Smith remained one game behind District 10-4A leader Highland Park.
