Allen Invitational: Allen falls to John Paul II; Heritage edges Bishop Lynch
ALLEN — John Paul II, the state’s No. 3-ranked large private school, held on down the stretch to beat host Allen, 58-55, in the first quarterfinal game of the tournament. John Paul made 11 of 13 free throw in last 1:12.
John Paul II took a 21-19 lead on Bola Alade’s 3-pointer with 3:36 to go in the second. Alade finished with a game-high 22 points.
Trailing by seven with 1:12 to go, Allen pulled to within one, 56-55, on Olin Carter’s 3-pointer at 15 seconds. It was his second 3-pointer in six seconds.
But Bola Alade hit two free throws with nine seconds left, and Allen’s two three-point attempts to tie were not successful.
Frisco Heritage edges Bishop Lynch: Senior Jordan Box scored a game-high 31 points to lead Frisco Heritage to an 82-76 first-round win over Bishop Lynch in a matchup of state-ranked teams.
Heritage, ranked fourth among the state’s 4A teams, grabbed a 25-18 lead after one quarter.
Seniors lead way for Highland Park: Senior captains Clayton Murtha and Derek Cahn each scored 15 points to lead Highland Park (14-2) to a 57-44 first-round win against Rockwall in the large-school (4A-5A) bracket.
Murtha and Cahn combined for 12 of Highland Park’s 19 first-quarter points.
Rockwall’s leading scorer, Austin Grandstaff, hit a 3-pointer with three minutes left in the third quarter. But turning up court, the Oklahoma State pledge collided with an official and twisted an ankle. He left the game and did not return. Grandstaff finished with a game-high 19 points.

Alade picked up 22 points to lead John Paul II to a 58-55 win over host Allen. His pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining sealed the game for JPII.
