Plano West transfer Tyler Davis, denied eligibility by 10-5A DEC; appeal pending

ALLEN – Tyler Davis, one of a trio of talented transfers to Plano West’s boys basketball team, was denied eligibility by the University Interscholastic League’s 10-5A District Executive Committee on Tuesday, voted down by a 1-4 vote.

The hour-long meeting, held at the Allen ISD Activity Center, focused on Davis’ relationship with several new and existing players on Plano West — ranked No. 1 in a preseason poll by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

Davis (6-9, 270), a 5-star junior center, transferred from Frisco Liberty over the summer, joining two other transfers – junior point forward and Ohio State pledge Mickey Mitchell and senior point guard Avery Johnson, Jr., son of former Mavericks coach Avery Johnson, Sr. Mitchell and Johnson’s eligibility were not discussed at the meeting, and have presumably been approved heading into the regular season, which starts Nov. 11.

Davis, Mitchell and Johnson are all affiliated with the same AAU program, the Texas Titans, as are two starters from the 2012-13 Plano West team, Soso Jamabo and D.J. Hogg. Hogg was SportsDayHS’ newcomer of the year last season.

Frisco Liberty boys basketball coach Marcus Eckert told the committee that after he informed Davis’ mother, Yvette Rubio, that he was going to indicate on the Previous Athletic Participation Form that he felt the transfer was for athletic purposes, Texas Titans coach Scott Pospichal called, asking him to reconsider the disputed PAPF.

Rubio disputed those claims, saying that Pospichal didn’t care what high school programs his players participated in. She made the move, from a Frisco ISD-zoned apartment to Plano ISD-zoned home, to have more space for her sons and to be closer to work, she said.

Rubio said after the meeting that she plans to appeal the decision to the UIL State Executive Committee. If Davis fails to gain eligibility with the SEC, he can participate as a sub-varsity athlete this season and play varsity for West as a senior.
