Chris Mayberry resigns as Prestonwood Christian basketball coach

Chris Mayberry said he has resigned as boys basketball coach at Plano Prestonwood Christian after leading the team to TAPPS 5A state championships the last two seasons.

Mayberry, 38, said he will return to The First Academy in Orlando, Fla., and serve as the varsity boys basketball coach and middle school assistant principal. Mayberry was at The First Academy for 13 years before coaching the last two years at Prestonwood.

“My wife’s father passed away, so we’re going back to deal with family,’’ Mayberry said. “I got to coach some great kids, obviously high-level players. [Prestonwood] is a great community, and the administration is great. It’s just a question of getting back to family and doing some of the things responsibility-wise that I need to do.’’

Mayberry said he wanted to wait until the basketball season ended and star senior recruit Julius Randle decided which college he would attend before leaving Prestonwood. Randle, a McDonald’s All-American who is ranked as the second-best recruit in the nation in the Class of 2013 by, announced Wednesday that he was committing to Kentucky.
