Boys basketball 5A Region II: Early 12-0 run propels Richardson Berkner to 66-52 win, state tourney
WACO — With a state tournament berth on the line, Richardson Berkner took care of business.
Fueled by a 12-0 first-quarter run, Berkner defeated Austin Anderson, 66-52, in the Class 5A Region II championship game at Midway High School.
In the game’s early stages, Josh Francis ignited Berkner’s offense with a trio of 3-pointers, propelling the team to a 15-6 first-quarter lead.
“We were just playing like a team and moving the ball,” Francis said. “We had momentum, but we had to play smart to win the game.”
Anderson (30-7) pulled within a point at 23-22 in the second quarter. But Berkner (33-5) closed the first half on an 11-2 run and went to the locker room in front, 34-24.
“It’s a game of runs,” Berkner coach Jason Petty said. “We were fortunate to get out of here with the win and move on.”
Berkner kept up the pressure in the second half, as Anderson closed the gap to single digits only once.
With seconds remaining in the third quarter, Rasmus Bach completed a three-point play, cutting Berkner’s lead to 47-38. But Torey Everett’s jumper and Keenan Evans’ 3-pointer at the buzzer left Berkner in command at 52-38.
Berkner benefited from balanced scoring, with four players reaching double digits. Evans paced the offense with 17 points, while Soma Edo added 14. Kendal Yancy-Harris scored 13, and Francis contributed 11.
John Gramlich led Anderson’s scoring with 16 points, and Bach followed with 15.
Berkner earned a berth in the state tournament for the first time since 2006. The UIL will announce the pairings for the state semifinals Sunday.
“I think we have a chance at the state title,” Francis said. “I’m confident in my team.”
