Last-second free throw lifts North Crowley boys basketball over Arlington Bowie, 71-70

ARLINGTON — Senior guard Jalen McCloud made a free throw with 1.2 seconds left to help North Crowley defeat Arlington Bowie, 71-70, and remain undefeated in District 3-5A. Ranked No. 6 in the SportsDay 5A area rankings, North Crowley (23-6, 10-0) also kept alive an 81-game district winning streak.

Bowie (20-9, 8-2) seemed to have forced overtime as McCloud missed a 15-foot jumper. A late whistle that couldn’t be heard above the din of the racous crowd gave McCloud another chance to win the game. He missed the first free throw but hit the second. Bowie had tied the score at 70-70 on a laypup by senior Jeremy Senglin with 13.2 seconds left.

“All my coaches were telling me get a timeout, but I thought I would just draw something up to get Jalen the ball and he had it,” North Crowley coach Tommy Brakel said. “We want Jalen to have the ball at that point to see what happens.”

“Not losing the district winning streak crossed my mind,” McCloud said. “We haven’t lost since I’ve been on varsity as a sophomore. At the end, any one of us can make the shot. After I missed the first free throw, it’s just a confidence thing, knowing you can make the next one.”
