Boys basketball player of the week (1/28): Plano East's Pat Birt
What he did: Birt produced 40 points and 22 rebounds in two wins last week. He shot 71 percent from the field while scoring 21 points and grabbing 16 rebounds against Allen, then followed with a 19-point, six-rebound performance against McKinney.
Who is he? A 6-4 senior guard.
The stats: Birt is averaging 9.0 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists this season.
He said it: “I just talked to my dad. He told me I need to be more confident in myself, be more aggressive; basically, I need to have more of a monster in my game. That’s helped me to be more aggressive. That’s probably why I’ve been averaging more points.”
Coach said it: “He’s really strong. He’s about 6-4, but he’s got big arms, a strong kid, shoots the ball pretty well, but he’s got a little knack for just getting to the basket off the dribble. That’s definitely his strength.” — Jeff Clarkson
Did you know? Birt transferred to Plano East this year after
attending Arlington Grace Prep. … He has a scholarship offer from Long Island
University and is being recruited by Auburn, Texas Tech, Fresno State and the
College of Charleston.
