Forte's 24 points help FM Marcus repeat as 5A champs

AUSTIN — Phil Forte scored 24 points, including the final the eight for Lewisville Marcus, as the Marauders won their second consecutive Class 5A state championship, 56-52 over Fort Bend Travis on Saturday night.

Forte scored Marcus' first eight points, then put the game away in the final minute, making six consecutive free throws to preserve the lead. His last two with 11 seconds left came after Travis' Aaron Harrison made a 3-pointer to pull Travis within 54-52. Forte was named the game's most valuable player.

Lewisville Marcus (39-2) is just the fourth repeat champion in the 32 years of the 5A tournament.

Marcus Smart scored 15 points and Nick Banyard had 10 points and 13 rebounds for Marcus.
