Ryan boys hold off furious charge by Arlington Heights, 71-68
Denton Ryan 71, FW Arlington Heights 68: In Snyder, Trey Mohair was named regional tournament MVP and scored a team-high 22 points as Denton Ryan held off a late Arlington Heights rally to win the Class 4A Region I final.
Denton Ryan (23-11), the No. 3 seed from District 4-4A, advanced to the state tournament for the first time since winning the 4A championship in 2000. Gilbert Jackson scored 17 points for Ryan, and Marcus Holcomb added 16.
Ryan shot 63.8 percent from the field in the first half and took a 36-13 lead into halftime, then expanded the lead to 24 in the third quarter.
A’shawn Robinson had a game-high 23 points and helped Arlington Heights outscore Ryan 55-35 in the second half. Arlington Heights (24-10) was without Justin Hemphill, one of its top scorers, who missed the tournament with an injury.
There was a bizarre start to the second quarter, as Arlington Heights came out in a zone defense and Denton Ryan did not dribble the ball for the first 3:49. Both teams and both referees stood still while Heights fans yelled at coach Josh Welch to switch to a man-to-man defense. Ryan coach Bryce Overstreet said he wanted to draw Heights and its two tall players, Robinson and Damonte McFarland, out onto the perimeter.
