South Oak Cliff boys ride deep bench to 72-53 win over West Mesquite

South Oak Cliff played much like Kimball did Friday. It saw West Mesquite’s major weakness (its bench) and strategized, knowing it had a far deeper bench.

“We knew those guys were going to wear down, and they did,” South Oak Cliff coach James Mays said.

The Golden Bears won 72-53, opening up the game with a 10-0 run in the third quarter. Where West Mesquite saw little from its reserves, South Oak Cliff got a lot.

Mr Dawson, a backup guard, hit a 3-pointer to start the 10-0 run. He finished with seven. McKendric McKenzie had eight off the bench.

The victory means one of Dallas’ greatest rivalries will ensue once again. From 2005 to 2011, either South Oak Cliff or Kimball was in the 4A state championship game each year except 2010. Saturday will be their third faceoff this year.
