Wilmer-Hutchins boys hold on for 49-46 win over Carrollton Ranchview
Wilmer-Hutchins (26-7) scored five points in the last minute, all from the free throw line, to hang on for a hard-fought Class 3A Region II quarterfinal victory. In the last 26 seconds, Wilmer-Hutchins missed five free throws, but the makes were enough to withstand Ranchview’s comeback attempt.
Willie Hollins and Micah Cooper each had two of the free throws, and Devonse Reed had one for Wilmer-Hutchins’ last point. Reed, the team’s leading scorer this season, had a team-high 16 points. Hollins finished with 10.
Hollins’ free throws put Wilmer-Hutchins up 46-37 with 57 seconds to go. Niem Stevenson hit two 3-pointers in 12 seconds, the second pulling Ranchview to within two, 48-46, with 16.6 seconds left. After Reed hit one of two free throws with 15 seconds left for a three-point lead, Ranchview could not make the 3-pointer it needed. Stevenson finished with a game-high 20 points.
The teams were tied at 22 at the half. After Ranchview took a one-point lead, Reed went to work. He scored Wilmer-Hutchins’ next nine points. When he was done with that streak, Wilmer-Hutchins led, 31-27, its largest lead to that point.
The teams are in the same district. Wilmer-Hutchins won all three games between the two by a combined nine points.
Wilmer-Hutchins will face the winner of the Longview Spring Hill-Lindale game in a regional semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday at Texas A&M-Commerce.
