West Mesquite's Jalen Etienne hits game winner in 1-point win over Lancaster

Jalen Etienne made a short running jumper with 9.8 seconds remaining to give West Mesquite a 64-63 win over Lancaster in a Class 4A Region II quarterfinal Tuesday at Ellis Davis Field House.

Etienne rebounded his missed runner just before making the game-winner as West Mesquite (28-7) advanced to play South Oak Cliff in the regional semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Special Events Center in Garland.

Lancaster (22-9) had the ball under the West Mesquite basket with 1.6 seconds remaining but the lob was missed. West Mesquite trailed, 62-55, before outscoring Lancaster, 9-1, in the final two minutes.

Lancaster trailed by six at the half and by 10 on two occasions.  Lancaster took its first lead at 47-45 in the final minute of the third quarter and led, 51-50, after three.

Braylon Rayson scored 18 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to lead West Mesquite.  Etienne added 18 points. Bobby Word led Lancaster with 18 points.
