Senior guard Jayrn Johnson scored the first eight points of the game as South Grand Prairie started fast and went on to defeat Plano West in a 5A second-round playoff game at American Airlines Center.
South Grand Prairie (33-2), ranked third in the area in 5A, advances to face Hebron in the regional quarterfinals next week. SGP has not lost since Dec. 28, winning 16 straight games.
Johnson scored 14 of his 18 points in the first half, helping South Grand Prairie roll up a 20-point halftime lead.
Johnson hit three of South Grand Prairie’s eight 3-pointers, while Plano West hit just 3 of 20 from 3-point range.
Ben Emelogu added 14 points for SGP, and UTEP signee Chris Washburn had nine points and nine rebounds.
Plano West (26-9), the area’s No. 8 team, was done in by 7-for-22 shooting in the first half. Senior forward TJ Cline scored 25 points on 10-of-22 shooting, and Connor McWilliams added 12 points.
