Brother of Miami Heat player leads Berkner over Mesquite Horn, 70-61

GARLAND - Junior Kendal Harris scored 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Richardson Berkner (27-7) to a 70-61 win over Mesquite Horn in a Class 5A Region II area-round playoff game.

Trailing 46-36 at the 3:21 mark in the third quarter, Berkner grabbed control with a 19-0 run. It did not end until Horn hit a bucket with 5:20 left in the game, but Berkner then had a 55-48 lead that it would not give up.

Six players contributed to the Berkner run, with Keenan Evans leading the way with seven points. He finished with 13.

Horn had an 18-15 lead after one period. Michael King led Horn early, hitting three 3-pointers in the period. He finished with a team-high 23 points.

Horn built its lead to 35-27, thanks to a 10-0 run over the last 2:35 of the second quarter. But in the second half, after Berkner’s massive run, Horn would not get closer than five points late in the fourth quarter.

Soma Edo had 13 points and Xavier Thomas added 12 for Berkner. Anthony Sharp scored 16 for Horn.

Miami Heat player Terrel Harris was in the crowd. He is the brother of Berkner's Harris and a graduate of South Garland, the site of the game.

Berkner will face the winner of the DeSoto-Rowlett game next week in a Region II quarterfinal.
