Newman Smith wins thriller, makes playoffs
Stephen Spurlock scored 18 points and made one of two free throws with 4.1 seconds remaining to help the Carrollton Newman Smith boys beat Frisco Wakeland, 57-56, in a game that decided the final playoff spot from District 9-4A.
Boys playoff teams
Tuesday was the end of the regular season for many boys teams. The top four teams in each UIL 5A and 4A district made the playoffs. Here’s who got in.
District 4-5A: North Crowley won the district. Arlington Martin, Arlington Bowie and Arlington Lamar also made it.
5-5A: South Grand Prairie won the district. Duncanville, Cedar Hill and Mansfield Timberview also got in.
6-5A: Richland won the district, and Colleyville Heritage also made it. Irving MacArthur clinched a spot with a 69-64 win over Euless Trinity, and Irving Nimitz earned a berth with a 58-46 win over Irving.
7-5A: Keller Central won the district, and Coppell also made the playoffs. Keller made it to the playoffs with a 56-44 win over Southlake Carroll, and Justin Northwest beat Keller Fossil Ridge, 47-43, to get in.
8-5A: Flower Mound Marcus won the district. Plano West, Allen and Hebron also made it.
9-5A: Richardson Berkner won the district. Jesuit, Lake Highlands and Skyline are in.
10-5A: Garland Naaman Forest won the district. Rowlett and Garland Lakeview also got in. Garland earned a spot with a 69-51 win vs. Sachse.
11-5A: DeSoto won the district. Mesquite, Mesquite Horn and Longview also made it.
4-4A: Little Elm won the district with a 68-65 win vs. The Colony. The Colony and Denton Ryan also made it. Denton beat Wichita Falls, 67-58, leaving them tied for fourth and forcing a tiebreaker Friday.
5-4A: Trophy Club Byron Nelson beat Boswell, 58-53, to win the district. Birdville, Keller Timber Creek and Aledo also made it.
7-4A: Arlington Seguin won the district. Mansfield Summit, Everman and Crowley are in.
9-4A: Frisco earned the outright district title with a 65-45 win vs. R.L. Turner, coupled with Carrollton Creekview’s 59-51 loss to Frisco Centennial. Creekview, Centennial and Carrollton Newman Smith also got in.
10-4A: Highland Park won the district. McKinney, McKinney North and Rockwall are in.
11-4A: South Oak Cliff leads the district by one game over Kimball, and they face each other Wednesday. Carter and Pinkston have clinched spots.
12-4A: Woodrow Wilson won the district. Hillcrest and Lincoln are in.
15-4A: Lancaster won the district. West Mesquite, Ennis and Red Oak also made it.
: Scored 21 as Keller made the playoffs with a 56-44 win vs. Southlake Carroll.
Orlando Byrd, Justin Northwest, wing: Had 20 points in a 47-43 win vs. Keller Fossil Ridge that earned Northwest a playoff spot.
Avery Norman, Garland, forward: Scored 17 as Garland made the playoffs with a 69-51 win vs. Sachse.
Jamie Briceno, Royse City, guard: Scored 26 points in a 93-49 win over Sulphur Springs that put Royse City in the playoffs.
