Friday's hoops replay: SGP boys beat Cedar Hill, win District 5-5A title

Jovan Austin had 16 points and eight assists, and Tyler Jacobs and Chris Washburn scored 13 points apiece to help the South Grand Prairie boys clinch the outright District 5-5A title with a 60-50 win over second-place Cedar Hill on Friday.
South Grand Prairie (30-2, 13-0), the state’s third-ranked 5A team, trailed 29-24 at halftime. But SGP outscored Cedar Hill (22-9, 10-3), 15-5, in the third quarter and pulled away from there. Washburn also had six rebounds and scored four times on dunks.
Brandon Conley’s dunk in the final seconds gave the Keller Fossil Ridge boys a crucial 53-51 win over Southlake Carroll. The teams entered Friday as part of a three-way tie with Justin Northwest for fourth in District 7-5A. Northwest beat Denton Guyer, 47-42, and Keller lost to Keller Central, 57-54. That left Fossil Ridge, Northwest and Keller tied for third.
Still tied in 9-4A
Kevin Stephens and Ryan Thomas scored 13 points apiece as the Frisco boys beat Frisco Wakeland, 64-58, and stayed tied with Carrollton Creekview for first place in District 9-4A with one game left. Creekview got 19 points from Stephen Buckner and beat Frisco Heritage, 68-62. Frisco has the tiebreaker, having swept its two district games vs. Creekview.
Matt Jones, DeSoto, guard: The junior, who has committed to Duke, scored 18 points to lead the state’s eighth-ranked 5A team to a 55-38 win over Mesquite. The win gave DeSoto (27-5, 8-1) sole possession of first place in District 11-5A, by one game over Mesquite (18-11, 7-2).
James Lonergan, Lake Highlands, forward: Scored 27 points — going 9-of-13 from the field and 9-for-9 from the free throw line — and had 11 rebounds in a 79-59 win over Skyline that left the teams tied for third in 9-5A.
Tavarius Shine, Irving MacArthur, forward: Had 31 points and 16 rebounds in a 50-48 victory vs. Grapevine.
TJ Cline, Plano West, forward: Scored 31 points as the state’s 11th-ranked 5A team beat Lewisville, 62-58.
Devonse Reed, Wilmer-Hutchins, guard: Scored 25 points as the state’s seventh-ranked 3A team beat No. 10 Carrollton Ranchview, 58-53.
Chelsea Savage, Little Elm, guard: Scored 26 points as Little Elm earned the last playoff spot from District 4-4A with a 53-48 win over Denton in a fourth-place tiebreaker. Little Elm will open the playoffs against Canyon.
Haley Carruthers, McKinney Boyd, guard: Scored 21 points in a 51-47 win over Garland Lakeview in a District 10-5A fourth-place tiebreaker. Boyd will open the playoffs against Skyline.
Farrin Bell, Richardson, guard: The SMU signee scored 18 points in a 48-34 win over Richardson Berkner in a District 9-5A second-place tiebreaker. Richardson will play Garland Naaman Forest in the first round of the playoffs, and Berkner will open postseason play against Garland.
Rosa Arana, Pinkston, guard: Scored 14 points in a 47-26 win over Seagoville in a tiebreaker to decide the fourth playoff spot from District 11-4A. Pinkston will play Lincoln in the first round of the playoffs.

14: Rebounds for Kelvin Downs as the Arlington Seguin boys clinched the 7-4A title with a 63-41 win vs. Mansfield Summit. He also had 14 points.
