Late run pushes Garland Lakeview past DeSoto and into boys basketball 5A state tournament
WACO — Chris Jones made eight of his 10 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter as Garland Lakeview edged DeSoto, 54-50, in the Class 5A Region II final at Waco Midway High School on Saturday. Lakeview ended the game on a 10-2 run after trailing 48-44 with 3:28 remaining.
Lakeview advances to the Class 5A state tournament in Austin next week.
Jones scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half after sitting most of the first half in foul trouble.
Jones made two free throws with 1:28 remaining to give Lakeview (36-1) a 49-48 lead. Brian Lipsey added two more free throws with exactly one minute remaining on the ensuing possession after a DeSoto miss to make it 51-48 in favor of Lakeview.
DeSoto's Antwan Space scored on a layup with 43.7 seconds left to cut the deficit to 51-50.
Desoto (34-4) committed its seventh team foul with just under two minutes remaining in the third quarter. The free-throw disparity in the second half proved to be the difference. Seventeen of Lakeview’s 25 second half points came at the line.
