Trio of Dallas-Fort Worth baseball teams in search of first state titles
In search of their schools’ first baseball titles, Flower Mound, Argyle and Sunnyvale will travel to Central Texas this week to the UIL State Baseball tournament, held Wednesday through Saturday at Austin’s Disch-Falk Field and Round Rock’s Dell Diamond.
Behind Texas signee Kyle Johnston — who had a win and a save in a two-game sweep against rival Flower Mound Marcus in the regional final — Flower Mound (32-12-1) will face Pearland at noon Friday in the 5A semifinals. Flower Mound is in the state tournament for the first time since making back-to-back trips in 2003 and 2004.
Argyle (31-9-1) will make its first state appearance, facing Sinton (25-9-2) in Wednesday’s Class 3A semifinals. Argyle is the first program not from Texarkana to advance out of Region II since 2005.
After reaching the regional semifinals two out of the last three years, Sunnyvale (28-7) will make its first state trip, facing East Bernard (25-5) at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
