Rockwall bats come alive, plating 12 in series opener against Jesuit

DALLAS – Rockwall took the opener of its Class 5A Region II area playoff series with Jesuit, claiming a 12-6 victory on Thursday night at Jesuit.

Game two is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Rockwall tonight, with game three set to return to Jesuit on Saturday if needed.

Jesuit jumped out 1-0 in the first on a Grant Reuben RBI single, but a 2-run triple by Rockwall’s Gary Burton keyed three-run third inning for a 3-1 edge.

Jesuit’s Darius Hill (3-for-4, 2 RBI) scored on an error in the bottom of the third to cut into the lead, but Rockwall stung back for five more runs in the fourth inning to push its lead to 8-2.

The big hit in the inning came from Nick Lutzel, crushing a bases-loaded double to drive in three runs.

But Jesuit came back with its own big inning, scoring four times in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 8-6. Kyle Muller (3-for-4) and Hill both had two-run singles to get the runs across for Jesuit.

Rockwall responded with another big scoring rally in the fifth, pushing four runs across for a 12-6 advantage. Nick Colacecchi capped the rally with a two-run double, following RBI singles by Garrett Moon and Burton (2-for-2, 3 RBI).

Rockwall’s A.J. Merkel got the win in relief, while Jesuit’s Muller was tagged with the loss.
