Baseball player of the week (5/5): Frisco Liberty's Josh Ryan
Josh Ryan, Frisco Liberty
What he did: Ryan is usually the closer, but when Frisco Liberty lost the first game of its series against Mesquite Poteet he received the surprise start and pitched a no-hitter, striking out 10, as Liberty won, 3-0. It took the series with a 2-1 win in Game 3 the following day.
Who is he? A senior right-handed pitcher.
The stats: Ryan is 8-2 with six saves, 83 strikeouts, 27 walks and an 0.58 ERA.
He said it: “We had a conversation at the beginning of the week, if we go down in the first game, coach had trust in me being able to start the game on Friday and to go all seven. So I was preparing myself.”
Coach said it: “We talked about pitching to contact early. He was able to keep his pitch count down early. He went three innings, he went nine up, nine down, with one strikeout. And then the next four innings I think he had nine strikeouts. He started just getting ahead.” — Scott McGarrh
Did you know? Ryan is signed to pitch for Arkansas Tech next year. … He was also a receiver for Liberty’s football team ... Liberty plays Bryan Adams in the area round.
