Baseball roundup: Marcus takes top spot in 5-5A; Carroll wins 4-5A; Martin claims 3-5A title

FLOWER MOUND — Flower Mound Marcus saved its best for the final day of the regular season, shutting out Hebron, 4-0, to claim the No. 1 seed in the playoffs from District 5-5A.

Marcus (25-6, 10-4) tied Flower Mound for first place but had the tiebreaker edge by winning the teams’ head-to-head district series, two games to one. Hebron (19-12-1, 7-7) had claimed a playoff spot with an 8-0 win over Lewisville on Thursday.

Conner Dotson pitched into the sixth for Marcus and had nine strikeouts while allowing four hits. Reliever Evan Nichols struck out three of the five batters he faced.

Marcus scored runs in each of the first three innings, starting with an RBI single by Brendan Venter in the first inning.

Southlake Carroll 8, Haltom 3: Garrett Hale scored two runs and drove in two, and Joe Heineman pitched five scoreless innings as Carroll (25-4, 11-3) won the 4-5A title.

Arlington Martin 13, Arlington Bowie 0: Daniel Lingua went 3-for-4 with five RBIs as Martin won District 3-5A .

Woodrow Wilson 1, Hillcrest 0: Luke Whitten pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out 10 as Woodrow Wilson won the District 12-4A title.

Highland Park 2, Terrell 0: Layne Looney pitched his second straight no-hitter.

Frisco Wakeland 3, Frisco Liberty 2: Liberty’s loss in nine innings, coupled with Prosper’s 4-2 win over Frisco, left Liberty and Prosper tied for first in 9-4A. They’ll play Saturday for the No. 1 seed.
