Baseball/softball replay: No-hitter for HP's Looney; Allen hitter goes 6-for-6

First district title

Rachel Holland threw a one-hit shutout, and Caitlin Arnett and Raina Scoggins each had three hits as the Richardson Pearce softball team beat Sunset, 17-0, and won the first district title in program history. Pearce (21-2) and Lake Highlands both finished 10-2 in 9-5A, but Pearce swept Lake Highlands and will be the district’s No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

Layne Looney threw a no-hitter and struck out 13 as the Highland Park baseball team beat Carrollton Creekview, 3-0. ... The North Forney softball team had already clinched the 10-4A title, but Mesquite Poteet prevented the state’s 10th-ranked 4A team from finishing unbeaten in district play by winning, 7-6. It ended North Forney’s 13-game winning streak.

FRIDAY’S STANDOUTS

BASEBALL

Cason Sherrod, W.T. White: The senior threw a two-hit shutout and struck out nine in five innings in a 10-0 win over Richardson Berkner. Sherrod, who visited Oklahoma last week and has had major league scouts watching his games, has struck out 50 in 28 innings over his last five outings.

Reid Petty, Mansfield: Allowed one hit and struck out 10 in six scoreless innings and was 2-for-2 with a home run and five RBIs as District 7-5A leader Mansfield beat Cedar Hill, 6-0.

Shea Langeliers, Keller: Hit a walk-off single that drove in the winning run during a two-run bottom of the ninth that gave Keller an 8-7 win over Southlake Carroll, the state's fourth-ranked 5A team. Carroll dropped out of a tie for first in District 4-5A and fell one game behind Keller Fossil Ridge.

SOFTBALL

Allie Smith, Flower Mound: Was 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs as the state's third-ranked 5A team claimed the outright District 5-5A title with a 13-1 win over Denton Ryan. LSU pledge Sydney Springfield homered for the third time in four games for Flower Mound (24-6-1, 9-1).

Dani O'Brien, Plano: Pitched a five-hitter as Plano earned a playoff berth with a 7-1 win over Allen. Jennifer Puchala had three RBIs for Plano, which will open the playoffs against District 9-5A top seed Richardson Pearce.

Allie Turner, Kennedale: Pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out nine as the state's second-ranked 3A team beat Mineral Wells, 3-0.

STAT SHEET

29: Margin of victory for the Southlake Carroll softball team, which clinched a playoff berth with a 29-0 win over Haltom. Carroll will play Arlington Martin in the first round of the playoffs.

6: Hits for Allen's Hayden Hans in a 16-5 victory against Plano West in baseball. Hans was 6-for-6 with four doubles and five RBIs.

10: Strikeouts for Coppell baseball pitcher Drew Hanson in 6 2/3 innings in a 2-1 win over Flower Mound Marcus, the No. 1 team in SportsDay's 5A area rankings.
